Temperatures in Ocala reached the low 80s today. We’re relishing the gorgeous weather!
I cannot tell you how fantastic it feels to be able to step outside and not immediately start sweating.
Since Ryan and I wanted to eat dinner outside today, I didn’t want to make a meal that was too warm. While 80 degrees is cooler than usual, it’s not exactly chilly, so I figured an entrée that was nice and cold would be fun to eat by the pool.
I made simple seafood salad subs by combining imitation crab crab meat with light Miracle Whip (don’t hate!), mustard, sweet relish and chopped red onion.
Served with a side of roasted green beans.
And then Ryan and I shared a bag of peach rings for dessert. Mmm.
I never used to think peach rings were that good until Ryan got me hooked on them. I think they taste best when they’re slightly stale, a little hard and extra chewy.
Speaking of stale food, my mom loves stale Peeps!
Did you know that they make about two billion different kinds of Peeps annually? The things you learn when doing a Google images search…
The Worst Halloween Candy
All this candy talk has me excited for Halloween! Now that we live in a real neighborhood, I’m hoping we’ll get trick-or-treaters this year. I’ll be sure to pass out erasers, pennies and pencils.
Just kidding. Puh-lease. We’ll definitely be handing out toothbrushes. I mean candy. C’mon! I’d give away ice cream if I could.
When I was a kid I was all about 100 Grand bars (a rarity), Almond Joys (no one else liked these, so I got them all) and KitKats.
The worst candy? Definitely Bit-O-Honey.
Runner up: Weird gobs of peanutty goo wrapped in orange and black wax paper.
People who pass out that candy should be fined and then their taste buds should be thoroughly examined… along with their souls.
Does anyone actually like that stuff?
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
Definitely not a fan of the crappy Halloween candy you posted there, OR of stale peeps.
As far as the peach candies go, I actually don’t care much for the rings, but I LOOOOOVE the other ones that are just like a wedge. I could eat those by the pound…so so so good! 😛
krista says
I only like the wedges/circles too! Haribo brand.
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
Yes! They are the best 🙂
linz says
so funny! i’m a teacher and last year i bought play-doh and pencils to pass out and my husband got so mad and bought candy! haha. that waxy stuff is just weird and should not be edible!
Lindsay says
I would have done the same thing your husband did. I know that we are trying to prevent obesity, but come on let the kids have some candy on Halloween! 😀
Joanie says
I love bit-o-honey! My dad loves them too, maybe I get it from him. 😉 The weird gobs of peanuty goo (perfect description, by the way) are totally gross though. I never ate those, neither did my siblings.
Anyone else ever trade candy between your sisters and brothers? We were SERIOUS candy traders back in the day…
Ashley says
Yeah! Trading was the best part of Halloween! It could get pretty cutthroat.
peanutbutterfingers says
oh yes! my sister and i would dump out our pillowcases full of candy and go to town!
Lindsey @ Happy or Hungry says
I am not a Peeps fan…and I have never heard of Bit-O-Honey! Maybe a good thing. The worst are definitely those little orange and black paper wrapped candies! No good.
My FAVE is Reese Peanut Butter Cups. I loooved getting those. And Smarties 🙂 Oh and the little square caramels. And mini Tootsie rolls aren’t bad either! Oh man and CANDY CORN!!!
I may go trick or treating this year…
Stef says
I may or may not be eating the Autumn mix of candy corn as I read these comments…
Reese’s and the square caramels were definitely my favorites too.
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Omg that Halloween candy is the worst!! What is in that black and orange wrapped paper? It always looked so gross I don’t think I ever tried it. My favorite Halloween candy was from this one house who would buy three big boxes of king sized candy bars and just left out a sign saying take one. It was awesome.
Molly says
I loathe peeps…but LOVE bit o’ honey. We put them in with our customers dining checks at my family’s restaurant, so I always steal handfuls when Im working in the office (muahaha).
and I live in Minnesota- so the fact that it’s 80 degrees here is unheard of for us. A month from now we may be covered with snow 🙂
Jessica says
LOL!!! I actually love bit-o-honey AND the weird gooey peanut butter things.
Kayla says
Me too! They’re tasty and classic!
Emily says
I love both of them too!
Lindsey says
Stale Peeps are the best! Leave ’em out over night and they’ll be perfect i the morning.
Vanessa says
That seafood salad looks good! I’m gonna have to try that.. lunches have been boring lately.
Yesterday I was talking about gummy peach rings on twitter with someone, and how they clearly count as a serving of fruit.
Bit o-honey… gross!
Emily says
how do you and ryan decide what’s for dinner? do you just pick and he likes whatever you cook or do you guys mutually decide what sounds good? does he ever cook for you?? 😉
Meagan says
Awww you don’t like Mary Janes?? I’m surprised considering your love for pb. I actually never had them as a kid but tried for the first time about a year ago and am IN LOVE. I can’t even keep them in my house anymore because I gobble them up so fast. I like to let the yummy peanut butteriness melt in my mouth.. mmm soo good =)
Michelle says
I love bit o honeys and those wax paper-wrapped candies! I especially love the ones with the Peanut butter inside of them!
Isn’t it strange how different we all are?
Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine says
Haha I 100% agree with you on the weird orange and black blobs! honestly, SO gross. I am also not a fan of Sweet Tarts or any of that stuff. Chocolate all the way!
Marie says
I like the bit-o-honey, actually but yeah…no to the other stuff. What is it supposed to taste like anyway? I love stale & chewy when it comes to gummy candy!
Ashley says
Those orange and black things are the worst! Once someone gave us Andes mints from Olive Garden. Those are tasty, but how cheap can you get?
dee says
I always got to round up the Almond Joys at my house, too! I cut in front of my older brother one year (the house was giving out dollars, c’mon!) and he ended up getting a persimmon 🙂 Score? Little sister: 1 (dollar!), Big bro: ZERO..heh. I loved getting anything chocolate, and like you, I never cared to venture beyond the wrappings of those mushy black and orange wrapped goop. I also passed on the Sugar Daddy pops.
When I worked with children, I handed out Halloween pretzels, small Halloween toys, Halloween rub-on tattoos, Halloween character chocolates and DumDum pops because there HAS to be SOME candy!
Alicia says
The real question is what IS that stuff? It’s like biting into a sees candy, you never know what you’re gonna get!
Coco says
Ahahaha this post brings back memories!
My favorites were Crunch bars and my brother LOVED Butterfingers, so we would always switch.
One lady would always give out “healthy” snacks like popcorn or pretzels so we would skip her place HAHA. And one house was rich and gave out FULL SIZE HERSHEY BARS!
Suzanne says
I know! That stuff is SO GROSS! Also those weird hard candies… is legit candy really that much more expensive?
Meagan says
Julie I think you need to try Bit-O-Honey again, maybe it will be like asparagus and you will love it as an adult!
nicole @ simply Nicole says
ugh I forgot about those candies! SO GROSS! I love peach rings tho!
My favorite halloween candy are Kit Kats, 3 Musketeers, & candy corn!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Guilty. Not to the nasty orange and black wrapped stuff. But I did used to eat bit-oh-honey. Now I am certain it would tear out my teeth!
Olivia @ PeanutButterNerd says
I LOVE Almond Joy! I tried it the first time while my boyfriend and I were about to leave the Chicago airport while coming back from our trip this August to Arizona.
Can I just say the US has the best grocery stores?! My boyfriend wouldn’t stop laughing at how fascinated I was with all the US only foods!
Anyways, in the end it turns out some grocery stores here in Canada DO sell Almond Joy mini size bars in packs of ten! Joy! haha
Mallory @ It's Only Life, After All says
i’m also an almond joy lover, but i especially love mounds – the dark chocolate and coconut combination is killer. other favs: milky way midnight (also a rarity), twix (amaze), and kitkats. YUM!
Anna @ Food Fitness and Frolicking says
Ahahah this post made me laugh! I’m glad someone else can’t stand that ooey gooey sticky weird bit-o-honey candy! YUCK. And to be honest, peeps make me CRINGE. Ew, sorry. But I’m definitely more of an almond joy, reeses cup, kind of person, ha.
Maria@La_Piattini says
I never even heard of Bit-of Honey! I always hated the people who gave out pencils. Come on- I want some candy! Pete and I make sure we always get the good stuff- and just try not to eat it first!
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
I’ve never heard of the bit oh honey candies before! I have a neighbour that hands out apples every year! Haha 😀
Emily says
I’m actually obsessed with bit of honey, soooooo good! Oh, and mary janes! I didn’t know people didn’t like them!
You can have all of my almond joys (yuck), and I’ll take your bit of honeys!
peanutbutterfingers says
deal! 😀
Anne says
Haha, that orange and black candy is SO gross! I am teaching on Halloween day (I live in S. Korea) so I’m gonna be generous and pass out GOOD candy (which is super $$$ here!) so they can experience a Halloween. 🙂
Gen says
hahaha my dad actually says that he likes bit o’ honey, but he might just be saying that to be different…..:P
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
I loved almond joys! We always got $2 bills from an older gentleman in our neighborhood! I loved it!
Emily says
Alright, I’ll admit it.
I was the weird kid that traded full size candy bars for bit o’honey and the orange and black ones.
To this day they are still my favorite. Send them all my way!
peanutbutterfingers says
hahahha you’re crazy, lady!
Jen W says
I agree with momma….. stale peeps are the best!
Ali says
You’re funny and no I don’t think anyone else liked them!
Tracy says
You know what I love? Those generic coin-sized disks, especially the peanut butter and rice krispy ones! I don’t know who makes them; they’re only around on holidays it seems and they are so much better than name brand stuff.
stevie says
Totally agree about the candy. My excitement was lowered when i took that candy out of my bag on halloween.
Kristy says
I love peach rings! The sugar-coated, yellow and orange, circles are addicting! I have to agree with you that bit-o-honey and the peanut-y goo candies are gross. As much as I love peanut butter, when mixed with high fructose corn syrup, freeze dried (or whatever they do to it), and stored in a warehouse for years on in, it becomes rather gross. I think my favorite Halloween candy is the halloween reeses pumpkins. Soooo good and peanut buttery : )
peanutbutterfingers says
yes! the reese’s pumpkins seem to have 5x more peanut butter filling!
Kristen @ Chocolate Covered Kristen says
Those blob things should be illegal. Why would anyone do that? I always liked Tootsie Rolls. Such and underrated candy!
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
Hehe it’s strange~but if it’s not European or Argentinean or Mexican candy, I don’t eat much of it! I guess even though I’m Korean, those other “bloods” are still in me. Peeps taste funny 😛 But it’s not a criticism! Just a difference in taste buds in different people.
Kristin @ STUFT Mama says
Okay so I totally like those two kinds of candy. ha ha ha! 🙂
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
Bit O Honey doesn’t even sound appealing!
I loved getting mini Snickers or pb cups! And houses that gave out full-sized candy bars?! Forget it! 🙂
I had the blue & white version of peach rings on the candy bar at my wedding!
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
My hubs LOVES Peach Os. I get him a bag every time I get him some other gift as a little filler. I just scored a bag for $1 at Target. ONE DOLLAR. I mean, come on. You can’t beat that.
I’m a big candy corn, Peeps, and Nerds fan. And I used to looooove getting pennies and nickles. It was like Allowance Part Two.
Melissa says
My mom wouldn’t let us eat the black and orange wrapped candies because she for sure thought a pedophile must hand hand wrapped them themselves and was hiding inside them? I don’t know she’s nuts sometimes 🙂 But I DO not like the taste of those. My fave was the cookies and cream hersheys!!! mmmm
peanutbutterfingers says
see? they are freaky!
Ilene says
My mom would think that too!
ellie says
Do you remember when that was a real fear? I think it must have happened in the early 90s, it seems like some freak put razor blades or something in kid’s candy…I don’t remember all the details…so strange!
Jamie @ snacktress says
I LOVE Bit O Honeys. Seriously. I also always got the little boxes of Dots because no one else liked them. I’m a weirdo.
Kristin says
Truth: I love the gobs of peanutty goo wrapped in wax paper!! One of the worst halloween candy in my book? Smarties. Ick.
Kelsey says
I love Bit-O-Honey! Sweet and chewy. Mmm. I enjoy them so much that I end up chewing on them instead of sucking them… perhaps that’s how they’re meant to be eaten, now that I think of it, though. It’s fun! 🙂
I hate those weird black and orange wrapped candies, though. I honestly don’t understand why they are still produced. There must be someone buying them… but I can’t imagine anyone’s actually eating them! Ick.
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
I agree with those black and orange wrapped things. They aren’t even food like! YUCK!
Jessica says
Almond Joys were always my fav. (Along with Reese’s cups, KitKats, Twix and Hershey’s Special Dark! Can you tell I like chocolate?) One lady in our neighborhood would hand out whole packets of gum, Big Red!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Yeah, those candies are super yuck. I like almond joys too! ANd sometimes skittles and snickers.
Brittney says
I used to try so hard to like those nameless weird orange and black wrapped candies when I was younger because throwing out candy was a crime to me! I just couldn’t do it though.
And I love stale Sour Patch Kids 🙂
