Temperatures in Ocala reached the low 80s today. We’re relishing the gorgeous weather!
I cannot tell you how fantastic it feels to be able to step outside and not immediately start sweating.
Since Ryan and I wanted to eat dinner outside today, I didn’t want to make a meal that was too warm. While 80 degrees is cooler than usual, it’s not exactly chilly, so I figured an entrée that was nice and cold would be fun to eat by the pool.
I made simple seafood salad subs by combining imitation crab crab meat with light Miracle Whip (don’t hate!), mustard, sweet relish and chopped red onion.
Served with a side of roasted green beans.
And then Ryan and I shared a bag of peach rings for dessert. Mmm.
I never used to think peach rings were that good until Ryan got me hooked on them. I think they taste best when they’re slightly stale, a little hard and extra chewy.
Speaking of stale food, my mom loves stale Peeps!
Did you know that they make about two billion different kinds of Peeps annually? The things you learn when doing a Google images search…
The Worst Halloween Candy
All this candy talk has me excited for Halloween! Now that we live in a real neighborhood, I’m hoping we’ll get trick-or-treaters this year. I’ll be sure to pass out erasers, pennies and pencils.
Just kidding. Puh-lease. We’ll definitely be handing out toothbrushes. I mean candy. C’mon! I’d give away ice cream if I could.
When I was a kid I was all about 100 Grand bars (a rarity), Almond Joys (no one else liked these, so I got them all) and KitKats.
The worst candy? Definitely Bit-O-Honey.
Runner up: Weird gobs of peanutty goo wrapped in orange and black wax paper.
People who pass out that candy should be fined and then their taste buds should be thoroughly examined… along with their souls.
Does anyone actually like that stuff?
Liz says
I love stale peeps!! On Easter morning growing up, we’d open up the package of Peeps as soon as we got it, so that it could get started doing its thing 😉
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Haha I agree! My favorites were, I mean ARE, Reese’s PB Cups, Snickers, and Butterfingers — THAT is what I would call the good stuff! 😉
Sandy says
Miricle Whip is the Best !! Worst candy~hard candy..best mini candy bars..snickers..
Meagan says
O I just remembered the absolute worst candy of all time was those warheads!! Everyone tried to be cool and eat them without making a weird face but man they were so awful!
peanutbutterfingers says
ah i cringed just thinking about those!
Michelle @ Crazy*Running*Legs says
I LOVE Bit-O-Honey. My least favorite is Smarties. They gross me out.
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
I agree with you on the weird gobs of goo stuff. Those always were the first to go to the trash!
Annie says
Oh my gosh, I hated those nasty peanut butter gooey things! Yuck!! Why do they even make such things?
Holly says
Those are totally my two FAVORITE candies (besides Reese’s, of course). I hate Skittles with a passion though. They smell weird, they turn your mouth a funny color and they are NAS-T!
Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) says
Oh my gosh , I think that unidentifiable candy in orange and black wrappers totally wins number 1 for worst! I used hate getting those, and my mom always assumed they were filled with razor blades anyways haha. Also bad = smarties and non-candy treats, like pencils and erasers. What was up w that??
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
those gobs are always bad… no matter how many years I give them a try again.
Kait says
Your post just reaffirmed my candy problem. I actually like “Bit o’ Honeys” and “Mary Janes”. . . Oh my gosh. There is not a candy I don’t like. That is so embarrassing! BUT I must defend myself in saying I would NEVER hand it out!!
Regardless… I loved your reference to candy swapping. That was the most fun part. My brother and I would go home, dump our trick-or-treat bags and go to town!!!!!
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
You know what’s a great use for stale Peeps?? Peep s’mores!! Oh, can’t wait for those. 🙂
My worst Halloween candy was definitely a tie between Necco wafers (seriously? Like biting chalk) and Red Hots (inevitably given out by well-meaning little old ladies). Give me those fun-size M&Ms and mini Twix bars any day! I’m not going to lie; I’m pretty depressed I’m not going to get any trick or treaters living in an apartment this year. 🙁
peanutbutterfingers says
genius!!!
Phyllin' Phat says
Last year I got called out by a kid who was disgusted with my poor taste of MMM’s and Kit Kat Bars! Seriously??? I thought those were premium halloween candies!!
jaci says
ahahahaha.
beggars can’t be choosers!
Jennifer says
Hey, if that kid didn’t want the M&Ms and Kit Kats, I’d gladly take them off his hands 🙂
Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef says
definitely not a fan of those candies. yuck! i love me some candy corn. i bought a bag of CARAMEL candy corn this weekend and it’s sooooo ridiculously good.
Genie says
OMG I love both Bit-O-Honeys and orange wrapped peanut-y gob candy (does it have a real name?!).
Kelly says
I think people buy the weird goo wrapped candies to keep themselves from eating them. I know I always buy the candy I like the least so I’m not as tempted to dig into it myself. I get enough of the good stuff at school that I don’t need a bowl of it sitting around the house.
Cait's Plate says
Haha I actually like those second ones except they COMPLETELY rip your teeth out.
I LOVE peach rings – those and sour patch watermelons…so good.
Mandee Lei says
I love Bit-O-Honey and the weird peanut goo!!! But I do dislike quite a bit of other candy…. I hate Smarties, Nerds, Runts, Candy Corn, Dots, Peeps, Laffy Taffy, Necco Wafers, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, and Skittles. But I hate to say the worst Halloween candy is a tie between Smarties and Candy Corn. Ick.
jaci says
I’ve never had either, but there was a house in my old neighborhood that would put out a buffet line where we could pick one “treat” out of one of the five or six buckets that included raisins, apples, granola bars, stickers and some stuff that was similar. WORST house of the neighborhood quickly followed up by the one that would hand out stale candy and paper yo-yo’s.
yep… paper!
peanutbutterfingers says
paper yo-yo’s? what ARE those?
jaci says
I know, sounds complicated and weird, but really it was just a circular piece of construction paper with the words “HAPPY HALLOWEEN yo-yo” typed on them and a piece of string/dental floss taped to it. Their instructions were to wrap the string around your finger and then point your finger down so it would fall, then whip that finger up in the air and swing it so the string wraps around again, point down, and repeat.
Thinking about it now, I guess they put in some effort but as a kid it was almost worse than getting to choose between apples or raisins for my halloween “treat”.
DIANE says
I actually like both candies; but I LOVE bit o honey; until this post I thought I might be the only one left out there b/c I can only find bit o honey at the dollar store!!
Paige @ Running Around Normal says
100 grand bars were my JAM!!
Also, I’m so jealous of the poolside eating! However, it did reach 80 here in Illinois today!
Kim @thefamilypractice says
so right about those black and orange things! I totally forgot about those!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
haha i don’t mind bit o honey. i can think of MUCH worse… namely, pixie sticks. i get a headache just thinking of those things.
Laura says
Halloween candy is sooo important! Right after I read this post my husband and I realized that since we are renting a house now this would be the first year that we could get some real trick or treaters. Thus began the very important conversation about what kind of candy we should give it. This is very important! You don’t want to be “that house” and the candy you choose says a lot about who you are. Important stuff 🙂
Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says
Lol! Bit O Honey and those peanut butter things are definitely the nastiest things ever! I always loved getting Snickers or Laffy Taffy! 🙂
Danielle says
My dad always those nasty candies. And anything with nuts in them. I hate nuts so I shared most of my candy stash with my dad.
Lindsey says
Candy corn! I know a lot of people love it but not me! I love the mini Smartie boxes 🙂
Ali @ Ali Runs says
Haha- love this post! I HATED bit of honey! Those always got tossed.
Nathan Miller says
Bit Oh Honey were ok, the worst candy ever at Halloween was Black Licorices. Seriously how can they even market that as candy….
Claire says
OMG, random but I started to have cravings for Almond Joy and Bit O Honey last year when I turned 28. I must be getting old or something lol. But seriously Bit O Honey is really good with hot tea. It like melts in your mouth
Amber Starr @ Love, Laugh, Live Well says
Those subs look good (and I’m jumping on the Miracle Whip bandwagon – mayo is SO gross!).
Those weird wax peanut candies are the worst! They sell them everywhere too and I always wonder who actually buys them. My favs were always reese cups! We had a woman who used to give us a small handful of pennies…it was weird.
Ronda says
Omg…i am cracking up at those weird orange and black candies! I never ate those. Maybe they are good? I would never know?
chelsea says
I LOOOVE almond joys AND bit o honeys! My favorite candy is the candy corn though 🙂 At my work we have a party all week long pretty much where each parent brings candy and we fill a goodie bag to the top for each kid. The amount of candy left over in the end is CRAZZY! Us coaches have to restrain ourselves hahah..
Molly says
hahaaa your “worst candy” picks flooded me with memories of halloween and how much I hated those types of candy as well!
eliza says
Julie I haaaaave to bring up the miracle whip! No hating here, but were you raised on miracle whip and not mayo? or both and you just ended up loving miracle whip? please explain…
As a mayo lover I just need to know 🙂 LOL maybe I should give MW a chance….—This topic reminds me of the miracle whip wedding commercial.
peanutbutterfingers says
i was raised on miracle whip, not mayo. i think the preference begins during childhood. 🙂
Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Muches & Moves says
I looove bit o honey! haha.
This is my first halloween in a “neighborhood” too! I want to be that cool house that has the best candy, so I have been brainstorming on what I should buy.
Caroline says
My mom loves stale peeps! And I kind of like bit o’honey. I was always mostly about reeses and twix thought. 🙂
Kaitlyn says
Bit O Honey is one of my faves!!
Baking Serendipity says
I loooove 100 Grand bars too 🙂 And, living in Phoenix, I definitely feel ya on how awesome the reprieve from the heat is!
LeeAnn says
My dad LOVES stale peeps!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Mary Janes are up there on worst candy lists for me. Those things are NASTY!
Corrie Anne says
I hate both your least favorites!!!!!!!!!! And tootsie rolls!!!! Yuuuuuck!! Peeps & Peach rings are great. I love the almond joys too! Wooo!!
alex says
I can’t believe it’s still 80 where you are! we may have hit 60 today! I agree with your mom! I like to open the Peeps and let them sit for a while! and yeah! what is that nasty stuff in the wax paper?!
E says
I hate those peanut butter candies, too! I also do not like Peeps, but stale/clearance ones after the holidays are great to make ‘smores with! My favorite candies to get trick or treating were Babe Ruth, Reese’s Cups, or Snickers. Snickers are still my favorite candy bar 🙂 Oh, and I LOVE slightly stale gummy candy, especially Haribo Gold Bears 😉
Ari @ Ari's Menu says
Yeah, those are gross. My favorites are those crunchy pb and chocolate pumpkin circles! They only come out this time of year and I used to stock up on bags of them!
Khushboo says
I’m some bloggers are gonna throw things at me but I HATED getting candy corn – bleh bring on the chocolate!
Sarah says
Julie, you seriously have the best sense of humor! I actually laughed OUT LOUD when you mentioned erasers, pennies and pencils…and toothbrushes haha. Love your jokes!
peanutbutterfingers says
🙂 just for your nice comment, i will send you real candy.
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Ohh it looks like you are having some gorgeous weather!! My favorite halloween candy was always Butterfingers or Almond Joy and now I’d love either of those plus Peanut M&Ms! I think some people give the yucky kinds away so that they don’t have the good kind sitting around their house… my family may or may not have done this last year 😉
Jenn @ Lotus and Pie says
Growing up in Sydney, Halloween was never a big deal for us 🙂 If we had the occasional trick or treater – My mum would give them sultanas or an apple! 🙂
gina says
those are two of my favorites!!! hahaha. but what tops my list? butterfingers and MILK DUDS!!! yuuummmmmmmmm.
peanutbutterfingers says
MILK DUDS! i forgot about those. i loved them, too.
