I was also a bit stressed because I had a lot on my to-do list yesterday and everything got neglected. The bright side? I think Sadie and Chase thought Mom being sick was the best thing ever. Movies and couch cuddles galore!
I was a bit nervous my sickness would stay around and I’d have to cancel my weekend plans which would’ve really, really bummed me out. Thankfully I’m doing much better (though still not 100 percent) so I am heading off to Michigan this afternoon! One of my best friends of 20+ years got engaged over the summer and I cannot wait to celebrate Carrie and also spend some quality time with our mutual BFFs Leah and Michaela who will also be flying in town.
We have some pampering on the agenda and also hope to visit a cider mill in addition to heading off to a boutique to help Carrie shop for a wedding dress! I am so excited and will be sure to recap everything on the blog next week.
I still have to pack and travel days always feel a bit frazzled around here but before the madness sets in, I wanted to be sure to share my usual Things I’m Loving Friday blog post with you guys! See below for a short roundup of some things that are making me smile this week. As always, I’d love to hear a little bit about something you’re loving this week in the comments section.
Enjoy your weekend, my friends! See ya on Monday!
Things I’m Loving Friday
I consider Babe one of the most underrated movies of all time (I wish I was joking) and absolutely LOVE it. Ryan always laughs at my love for the talking pig movie but you better believe I jumped at the chance to use my sick day yesterday to introduce Chase to this classic. He was SO into it and pointed out all of the animals and quickly picked up on their names so I think I may have a future Babe fanatic on my hands. The silver lining to food poisoning, my friends.
- Shortcut Pumpkin Spice Lattes
I gave a quick rundown of how I make my pumpkin spice lattes on Instagram Stories earlier this week but then I received a few messages from you guys asking me to detail everything on the blog as well. Ask and you shall receive! I begin by making a batch of pumpkin spice milk by combining 1 cup of milk (I love a combination of 1/2 cup whole milk and 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla cashew milk) and mix it together with 3-4 heaping tablespoons of pumpkin, 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice and a couple of drops of liquid vanilla stevia. (A little bit goes a long way with stevia drops! You can also use honey, sugar or maple syrup.)
I use my Aerolatte frother to mix it all up and then microwave it until the milk is hot, froth it again and pour it over my hot coffee! Viola! It’s not the fanciest method but it’s SIMPLE and that’s what I like! Also, one batch of pumpkin spice milk usually yields two pumpkin spice lattes for me and I like a very full cup of coffee!
- Toast with Jelly
Toast with jelly? I know, I know but before yesterday I cannot remember the last time I had a simple piece of toast smothered in butter and jelly. That’s kind of sad, right!? I feel like I always use restaurant’s toast to soak up egg yolks and typically gravitate toward heartier, more filling breakfasts at home but toast and bananas were pretty much all my stomach could handle yesterday. Thankfully toast with jelly and butter is so tasty and assuming it doesn’t now remind me of being sick, I think it will pop back up into my diet a lot more often in the near future.
How adorable is this book!? Blog reader Amanda sent me this absolutely beautiful children’s book completely customized with Chase’s name and a story about animals selecting the letters for his name after he was born. The book is colorful and fun and Chase instantly LOVED it. We read it three times before bed the first night it arrived! Amanda has an Etsy shop and personalizes these beautiful children’s names books and I am so impressed with her creativity. Thank you for the sweet gift, Amanda. We love it!

I used to love the movie Babe!
Kayla says
Oh no!! I am so sorry to hear you got hit with food poisoning! 🙁 That is the worst!! I am glad to hear you are feeling better though. Toast with jelly is just SO GOOD right?! Something so simple, yet so delicious! Something I’m loving this week is the fact that I got to tag along with my sister to my nephew Gio’s preschool open house last night! Have a great weekend, safe travels! xoxo
gina (fitnessista) says
so so glad you’re feeling better. and tom and i say “that’ll do, pig. that’ll do.” (or “es todo, puerco.” from the spanish version we accidentally watched with liv once) to each other on a regular basis. hahahah
Julie says
LOL!
Patricia @Sweet and Strong says
Oh No food poisoning is the worst! Hope you’re feeling better so you can enjoy your travels this weekend!
Rachel D. says
My son has loved Babe since he was a teeny guy (he’s still teeny for 2 though lol). He also loves Room on the Broom, super cute 30 minute film that Chase might like too! I highly recommend it. Anyway I somehow missed your Apple Pie Spice Check the first time you posted it, but it is on my to-do list now. I am glad you are feeling better. Food poisoning is awful. Have a safe and fun trip!
Julie says
It’s such a good movie!! 🙂 I’ll have to keep Room on the Broom on my radar for Chase soon! Thanks for the rec!
Caitlin says
Babe is one of my favorite movies ever! I constantly quote it and when I was teaching my 2 yo animal noises for the sheep I would say baaaa ram uuuu – which he loved. Hope you are feeling better for your girls weeekend!
Allison says
So sorry you had food poisoning, but glad you are feeling better now! Where are you going in Michigan this weekend? I live here and have tons of good cider mill recommendations if you happen to be in an area I know!
Rachel W says
In the event that it wasn’t food poisoning I would bleach everything! We’ve made that mistake in our house and everyone ended up super sick! Stomach bugs are the worst, but at least they usually end relatively fast (although it doesn’t feel like it).
Kelli Harrison says
That’s what I was thinking in case it was a “bug”
Carrie this fit chick says
Ugh! food poisoning is the WORST. So sorry to hear that. Oh my gosh, I LOVED Babe when I was younger!
Jeanette says
Enjoy your time in our beautiful state of Michigan! Definitely visit a cider mill! I don’t know what area you will be in but the Franklin Cider Mill is a good one with a still working cider press!
Teresa @sweettandahoneyb says
Happy Friday! I am glad you’re feeling better. Toast & Jelly is always my go-to when I am feeling under the weather.
THANK YOU for writing about your friend’s Etsy shop. I have been trying to be proactive about Christmas shopping (I know..I know..its October.. but I really want to relax and enjoy the holidays this year.. doing some shopping early takes the stress off!). I went ahead and just ordered a book for my little cousin for Christmas! Already so excited.
This week was a whirlwind but what’s making me smile are my plans for tonight! My husband and I have date night planned at our favorite pumpkin farm. The weather is beautiful here in Chicago and I can’t wait to get my apple cider donut 🙂
Have a great girls weekend!
Julie says
Hope your cousin loves it! Chase has been requesting that book every night before bed since it arrives so it’s a huge hit in our house!!
Stacey says
Where in Michigan will you be? If you go to a cider mill I highly recommend Franklin Cider mill. I hope you have the best weekend and welcome!
Liz says
I’m glad you are feeling better! Food poisoning is no joke! Enjoy your weekend, sounds like you gals are going to have a ton of fun! Aww, Sadie is so sweet! I love Babe! Mostly because of Fly, the border collie since I have one as well. 🙂 Thank you for sharing the Purple Hippo book! My best friend is due in January/February so I’ll definitely keep this in mind for when her little boy comes!
HILLARY GRAS says
Thanks for the childrens book idea – great idea for my girlfriend who is due in December 🙂
Marie says
Glad you’re starting to feel better; it sounds awful! Can’t wait for your weekend recap…been following your blog for ever and recognize all your friends now so it’s always exciting to see them pop up here and there again. Hope that didn’t sound creepy. One thing that’s making me smile this week are my kids and my husband. I can always count on them to make me laugh or smile. I’ve been a mom for 9 years now and hearing them call me Mommy or Mama still warms my heart so much, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of hearing it. Have a great weekend, Julie!
Julie says
Aw I love that! I agree — hearing “Mom” and “Mama” come out of a child’s mouth is just the sweetest. <3 Also, thanks so much for reading for so long!!
jordan @ dancing for donuts says
one of my all-time favorite breakfast is classic scrambled eggs with butter + jam toast!!! you can’t beat it. i actually used to make toast as a late night snack in college too…those were the days! and that shortcut pumpkin spice latte is genius – how much of a game changer are those milk frothers?! i’m obsessed. hope you feel better today & have a great weekend!
Nicole @ Bento Momentos says
I’m digging your latte method. I bought a frother at Ikea for a couple of dollars and it’s been my go-to. Hope you’re feeling better!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I’m glad you’re feeling better. Food poisoning is no joke. It’s pretty miserable. Have fun on your girl’s weekend.
Katie says
I’m recovering from mono and I swear all I have wanted to eat was cereal and toast. I’ve thrown some soup into the mix but I think there’s just something so comforting about toast when we don’t feel well.
Enjoy your time in Michigan. I live here and the trees are just gorgeous right now with all of their fall colors!
Dee says
My husband and I love “Babe!” I think we can mimic everyone’s voices (from ducks to dogs to pigs) by this point. Yep, we’ve seen it that much. (And I’ve been known to attempt Farmer Hoggett’s dance for my dogs. They remain unimpressed.)
Josie says
I love Babe! I named my cat Ferdinand after the goose! I’ll have to add that movie to my list for my son to see. The Purple Hippo book is so cute! I think it’s going to be added to my Christmas gift list. Thank you for sharing!
Hope your back to 100% to celebrate with your friends!
Sarah @ Sweet Miles says
Glad you’re feeling better!! Food Poisoning is the WORST!!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
Oh man, I’m so sorry to hear about your food poisoning! I got food poisoning during the last week of August, and it was SO miserable. It was definitely the sickest I’ve ever been as an adult, at least in terms of GI distress, so I definitely feel your pain! I hope you’re back to 100% very, very soon and are able to enjoy your time in Michigan 🙂
Kelli @ Hungry Hobby says
Awww that sucks glad you are feeling better though, so funny the babes loved you being sick though ha ha
KellPow says
OMG! I love Babe too. One of my favorites!
Rach says
1000x times YES to Toast with butter and Jam. Always comforting. Especially with an egg scramble. Anyway, I am LOVING your hair on your insta stories from the airports and would LOVE a beach wavy curl hack, if you have one. Products, routine, etc. And the corn bread recipe that you mentioned! Sending all the love and jealous for your weekend! Have a blast.
Bethany says
awe….I hope you get to feeling better! That book is adorable.
Nicole says
Hope you feel better!
I don’t know if you have ever had Norovirus which is GI bug… it’s similar to food poisoning in symptoms. I thought I had food poisoning once and called our HealthLink which is RN and she said it most likely wasn’t food poising due to when I ate the food to when I got sick. Just a thought. Norovirus can be contagious. I work in healthcare and have gotten it several times and for me, it felt better in less than 24hrs. Maybe look into that.
Tara says
I’m obsessed with toast and jelly. I go to farmers’ markets specifically for a delicious jelly/jam and perfect homemade bread. It’s my favorite indulgence and most desired dessert! I hope you recover completely and have a perfect weekend celebration!
Brittney says
This week I am totally loving my pink Yeti! I love the 30 oz Yeti cup and have been WAITING for them to produce a pink one! Which they finally did! I’m also loving these cookies I found at Costco this week! They’re called Thinster’s Cookie Thins and they’re Pumpkin Spice flavored! They’re wonderful and crunchy!
Kim from MN says
Yikes! So sorry you had food poisoning! I’m sure you know this already, because your mom is a nurse (so was mine!), but soft, low-fiber foods this weekend are your friend (the BLAND diet, i.e. bananas, and foods that are soft and have little to no fiber. Fiber is unfriendly to a healing digestive track.) I’m sure you’re already all over this! My husband had horrifying food poisoning right before we went to Disneyland, and even though he felt better once we actually got there, his stomach was still more sensitive than he realized, and he had some fried food at Disney and had an immediate relapse and spent a full day in the hotel room. 🙁 No bueno!
You’re never too old for Babe! I’m not surprised Chase likes it – that pig is the cutest!
Have fun this weekend! Looking forward to the recap. Sounds like it will be a blast!
marti @fitwithheart says
omg crazy. I had food poisoning this week too! its NOT fun but thankfully it hung around less than a day…so sorry to hear you were sick! making me smile this week… ROASTED kobacha squash.. i’m totally addicted! don’t forget to dip it in Trader Joe’s ketchup!
Erica says
I cannot believe I have never thought to mix whole milk and non-dairy milk to make a more satisfying hot pumpkin/hot chocolate/latte…etc! Once we started keeping whole milk in the house for my toddler, I realized it was delicious, but mixing with a nut milk will cut calories and probably keep in that creaminess I love. Thanks for the tip! Toast with jelly is delicious! Try piling some scrambled eggs on top too 🙂
Nat says
Uh no! I hope you’re feeling better now! There’s something about toast when you’re sick. But there’s equally something sad about toast when you’re sick. It’s all you can manage as it’s plain as! I know I’m feeling better when peanut butter’s back on the toast!
Kaitlyn @ Powered by Sass says
Food poisoning is the worst! I’m happy you had a speedy recovery. I’ve fallen victim to the dreaded cold this past week, so I think I’m loving not blowing my nose? That’s sad. Haha. Ooh, I also went to a pumpkin patch! That was super fun. 🙂
Tori says
Does the aerolatte work well?
Julie says
yes!!
