Other than baby watch and a birthday party, our weekend is pretty wide open which was very intentional. The holiday season is banana and when you sprinkle in normal holiday madness with an upcoming move, things feel especially crazy in our house. We’ll be spending the weekend organizing and working on house stuff mixed with normal family fun. I hope you all have a good one!!
See below for this week’s roundup of favorites, Things I’m Loving Friday style!

Boys’ Annual Christmas Ornaments
A few years ago, Ryan and I started a tradition of giving our boys ornaments that capture something about them that year — something that represents their interests, personality, etc. It’s easily become one of my favorite traditions of the holiday season in our home and I cannot wait to give the boys the ornaments we found for them this year. I almost always turn to Etsy for their ornaments every year because these small shops do such a wonderful job of making beautiful ornaments I can often personalize with the boys’ names and the year. Chase will be receiving a leopard gecko ornament in honor of his love for Lucky. Rudolph is Ryder’s ornament this year because of how much he loves Rudolph and the fact that he dressed up as Rudolph for Halloween (his sweet request) and sleeps with a Rudolph stuffed animal every night. Rhetty Roo is going to get a firetruck ornament this year because nothing lights this kid up like passing a firetruck along the road. He just calls them “wee-oo wee-oos” and I think he’s going to love a wee-oo wee-oo of his own on the tree this year!

Turkey Trot Costume Brainstorming
(Flashback from Thanksgiving 2012!)
Pivoting from Christmas back to Thanksgiving… Our family will be participating in a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning! Ryan and I used to do Turkey Trots together (and with Sadie!) all the time pre-kids but this will be the first one we’ve done since the boys were born. It’s family and stroller-friendly (I wonder if the boys can bring their Power Wheels!? Ha!) and we’re building the excitement in our house by making homemade turkey shirts with the boys. There are a million adorable turkey trot costume ideas on Pinterest but we’re going the simple route: Tan t-shirts, googly eyes, glued-on feathers and a painted beak and I found everything I needed at Walmart!

With my mom in town last week, I had a moment to pop into HomeGoods and just browse. Do you know how lovelyyyy that was for me!? Oh my gosh it’s been forever since I’ve had time to leisurely roam the aisles of HomeGoods by myself. While I was there, I picked up a couple of holiday books for the boys, some cards and a beginner embroidery kit for myself. I’ve been interested in embroidery for ages but very intimidated by it and figured a kit that said it was “perfect for beginners” would be right up my alley. The design isn’t too intense and I’ve been having the best time learning new stitches and completing this festive design. It was much easier than I anticipated (thanks to the detailed directions) and has been a fun little hobby to do in car pool lines, on the floor while the boys are playing (they love watching!) and at the end of the day when I’m listening to an audiobook.

What is one thing you’re loving this week?
Have you recently picked up a new hobby? Please share!

The embroidery you’ve done looks so beautiful!!!
I have never done embroidery but I love sewing with my sewing machine! I have made pillowcases, baby quilts, and burp rags. Since baby #5 haven’t had much time to sew but later when more time would like to again. Trying to enjoy the busy season and my kids being little as I know this won’t last forever. One day I will miss this!
Recently I have gotten into homemade card making. I get the kids busy with notebooks and stickers and do the best I can with my baby crawling all over me.🤣

I love that you’re still trying to make homemade cards — something you enjoy — even with 5 kids in the mix!! I am sure that’s hard to juggle <3

Your ornament tradition is such a great idea. I told my husband about it last year when you posted about it and we went and picked out ornaments for our 2 boys last night! Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
Julie says
Love that you’re doing this, too!! I had someone comment before that they did something similar and then gifted all of the ornaments to their kids when they moved out and were old enough to have their own tree — I thought that was so sweet!!
Lindsay says
We do the ornament tradition too, and will give them to our kiddos when they move out (just like my parents did for me!). Quick tip – keep a list of each kid’s ornaments. It’s easy to know whose ornament is whose if it has their name on it, but it gets harder over the years to remember when the ornaments don’t have their names (for example, which kid got the soccer ornament and which one got the tennis ornament 5 years ago?) Add to the list each year and keep it in the Christmas bin with the ornaments!

We are starting the ornament tradition here too! I’m hoping our zoo has a good one with their holiday lights starting because our 18 month old loves all animals and visiting the zoo this year!

My grandma taught me to embroider (and crochet) and seeing this reminded me of those sweet memories.
Your post today made me so excited for the holidays 🙂 We are totally making your lemon icebox cake for Thanksgiving (for the second year on a row). Yum!!
Jen says
I LOVE your pumpkin icebox cake, and it is my children’s favorite dessert for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I am plant based, so i use silk dairy free half and half instead andnitnis absolutely fantastic!!!!!!
Julie says
that sounds wonderful!

I have never heard the expression BANANAS AND PEPPER before … is it a NC kind of thing meaning chaos???
Love the embroidery … I don’t know where you find the time but mind you your kids can probably amuse themselves and each other by now.
Happy Thanksgiving from us in the Great White North!
Julie says
Oh no no! Bananas = “crazy” and then for pepper I meant just like “add in” but that did read really confusing!! Sorry about that!
Theresa says
I had to comment on this myself as I also was like….huh? After re reading it several times, I believe she meant “holidays are bananas, and add in (instead of pepper) normal holiday madness”…..
LOL, glad it wasn’t just me on this one!
Julie says
Hahah! Yes!! You got it 🙂
