Since my mind is all over the place and I am feeling a little scattered, I figured it might be a good day to participate in Amanda’s Thinking Out Loud Thursday tradition and ramble on like it’s cool. Sounds like a plan to me!
Let’s dive right into the randomness and begin with Sadie’s annual birthday challenge!
Thinking Out Loud Thursday
- Sadie’s Birthday Challenge Continues
Thank you all so much for the sweet birthday wishes for Sadie yesterday. She was definitely feelin’ the love! A couple of you asked whether or not we were going to uphold Sadie’s annual birthday challenge tradition and of course we had to do it! For those who may be new to the blog, every year, on Sadie’s birthday, we select two foods we think she will love and place them both in front of her at the same time to see which one she will go for first. We take bets on the favorite and whichever one wins moves forward to compete in the challenge the following year.
We look forward to her birthday challenge every year and this year we pitted last year’s winner – fried chicken from Harris Teeter – against a ridiculously tough contender: Publix fried chicken tenders. My money was on Publix chicken tenders because Sadie is a Florida girl at heart and every Floridian knows Publix chicken tenders are THE BEST. So which one took the top prize???
You can check out this year’s video here: Sadie’s Annual Birthday Challenge: Year 8
(FYI, we didn’t let her eat all the chicken you see in the photos and video. We just wanted the plates to be full and have a strong smell for her decision-making purposes!)
And now for an entirely too long explanation surrounding the victor in this year’s challenge…
We ended up letting Sadie go through the challenge three times because there was some interference in her first round. The interference was the carpet which we realized was unfairly close to the plate of Harris Teeter fried chicken. This may not seem like legit “interference” to most people, but if you know Sadie then you know she’s a baby on hard floors and will always run toward carpet for traction so she doesn’t slip everywhere. We think this tipped the scales in favor of the Harris Teeter chicken during round one since she ran onto the carpet and around to the chicken to select her winner. (Sadie is also a baby and refuses to sit or lay down on hard floors. It’s carpet only for this girl! This weird quirk is ridiculous and hilarious all at the same time.)
When we re-did the competition, we put the plates on hardwood floors AWAY from any carpeting and let her pick her favorite two more times. She went immediately to the Publix chicken both times. There was no wavering. Soooo… We’re going to give the win to Publix. And after writing all of this out and feeling like a total crazy dog lady, it’s clear to me that we get WAY too into this competition in our house.
Happy 8th Birthday, Sadie!
- Postpartum Hair Loss Is Real
Prior to giving birth, I read all about how your hair may be thicker and shinier during pregnancy and for a while there, I was really enjoying my thicker-than-usual locks. Apparently I should not have allowed myself to get too attached to my thicker hair because it is definitely on its way out. You guys, postpartum hair loss is REAL. After every shower, it looks like we have a chia pet growing out of our drain. From what I’ve read, everything should even out by the time Chase’s first birthday rolls around, but right now my hair is everywhere and all over our house. I even pulled a rogue hair out of Chase’s diaper the other day. Yeesh!
- Healthy Eating Comes In Waves
Some days I feel so motivated to eat healthy, meal plan and fuel my body with all the fruits and veggies… And other days I eat half a jar of peanut butter (cough – or almost a whole pint of Ben & Jerry’s – cough) in one day like a champ. Yup.
- The Bachelor
Who else is watching The Bachelor this season? (Raises hand… No shame.) Thoughts? I feel like I’m only really half-watching this season as I multi-task and do other things, but from the portions of the show I’ve caught so far, Amanda and Lauren B. stood out to me and seem both genuine and compatible with Ben. (And that lace white dress Lauren B. wore on her one-on-one date!? Gorgeous!) Jubilee also seems authentic and interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing more of her in the future. Also, I really do think Ben is an all-around good guy which is refreshing to see on this show!
- Does A Baby Qualify for the HOV Lane?
Early Sunday evening, I strapped Chase in his car seat and headed to the airport to pick up my mom. I found myself avoiding the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane but then I started wondering whether I qualified for the HOV lane because of my tiny passenger in the backseat. Just in case you’ve ever wondered the same thing, I checked the Department of Transportation’s website and infants and children do count as passengers. HOV lane it up, my friends!
- Sometimes Protein Pancakes Turn Out Perfectly… Other Times…
Sometimes protein pancakes turn out perfectly… Other times they end up like this. Meh. Drizzle some melted peanut butter on it and it’s all gravy, right!?
- Random Clothing Discoveries
Have you guys ever discovered something random on a piece of clothing you’ve owned for a while? Like a hidden pocket or something? I find stuff like this oddly amusing and the other day on an evening walk with Ryan, Sadie and Chase, I pulled the sleeve of one of my lululemon pullovers over my hands to keep them warm and saw this funny little note: “ready or snot.” Ha! I’ve had this pullover for a year or so and somehow never noticed that before. So random. I mean this discovery wasn’t “Whoa! I found $20 in my pocket!” cool, but it was still kind of cool in its own weird way.
- First Flight with Chase: Need Your Advice!
Chase and I are heading to Denver next Friday to spend the weekend with Leah and Michaela, two of my best friends from high school, and Michaela’s adorable two-month-old baby boy. I am REALLY looking forward to our trip but am admittedly quite nervous about flying with Chase for the first time. We sprung for a non-stop flight which makes me feel a little better but I would really appreciate any advice those of you who have traveled with a baby before may have for me. I am crossing my fingers things will go smoothly but I am quite nervous about our first flight together, especially since I will be doing it solo. Please share your words of wisdom!

I wrote a blog post after traveling with my son for the first time (link above). Since chase is a little older & busier now, I would bring a few new toys so they will distract him for a while! And tell the flight attendants its your first time flying with him – milk it for all its worth! 😉 they will be super nice & attentive to you
You guys will be fine – just know it may feel more like a workout than a relaxing travel day now that you have a baby in tow. I always joke that now when I make it to my gate with my kids it’s like finishing a total body workout! 🙂

I always struggle with making protein pancakes resemble anything even remotely like pancakes but have recently been putting the same batter in a to a previously under used waffle maker that I inherited from a friend and its a game changer (plus i can get other things done in the kitchen while the waffles cook unattended!)
Michele says
Great tips have already been mentioned. Bottles, pacifiers, fave toys/blankets, etc. Best thing I ever did was invest in a backpack version of a diaper bag for traveling or long outings. I used it until she was about 4. Otherwise don’t stress. I was on a plane once, this mother had a very, very fussy baby. She tried everything. She was so stressed out, but it turned out everyone was so sympathetic towards her situation that strangers, seat mates and flight attendance offered to help console the baby. She wasn’t comfortable with that, but the other people were great, that it helped the Mom relax a little. Turned out, after 45 minutes of crying…..the problem was clearly gas related !! So I’d suggest bouncing him on your lap when you can get him out, so he’s not all bunched up so much.
Side note: obviously you look incredible for having just given birth recently, you have great workout ethics and discipline, you’ve got the know how to eat and be healthy…..but it’s so nice to hear that your ‘real’ too. Example: post baby sleep deprivation, you have bad eating days too, you get in a funk too, etc. This is actually more uplifting than when people try to be perfect on blogs, to me that’s discouraging. So thanks, for being honest and real, it’s encouraging that we don’t have to be perfect everyday to be healthy. Just pick up and try again the next day.

Thank you for this comment!! I really appreciate it! <3

When I flew with my little one for the first time she was about 11 months old and did great. I just nursed her during take off and landing, and brought plenty of little toys to keep her busy. She was a happy camper, and it was a whole lot of stress for nothing. 🙂 Also, the people on my flight were amazing, and were nothing but kind when they saw that I had a baby.

no flying tips (no kids for me) but hoping that you are surrounded by some good people on the flight if things dont go according to plan! 🙂 fingers crossed for you.

Love the “ready or snot”! Your link goes to all things lulu, do you have a link to the shirts that have that, or your specifically?
Thanks!

Ok I don’t have any baby advice except have fun…..but you are in my head about the Bachelor! I also really like Ben but feel like I’m always doing a lot things during the show and find myself thinking “wait, what are they talking about now?” You hit the nail on the head with that dress of Lauren B’s. I NEED to find it because I think it would be so adorable for engagement pics, bridal shower, or rehearsal dinner. I also really like Jubilee and thought it was so unfair of the girls to try to start drama. Ok, Bachelor talk over! Go kiss that cute baby!

Hi Julie! I recently stumbled across your blog and *may* have binge-read all of your pregnancy posts, as I’m 16 weeks along with my first. I now read your blog everyday and am loving it! In keeping with the spirit of randomness on a Thursday, do you have any modifications for doing Body Pump while pregnant? I thought I saw a reference to this in one of your pregnancy updates, but haven’t been able to find a post about it on the blog. Thanks in advance, and thank you for being so relatable! 🙂

If you’re coming to Denver then you have to make a quick trip up to Boulder! The Flatirons in the winter with snow lightly dusted on them is absolutely stunning!

Feed baby during takeoff and landing!

My daughter is 2.5 now but we’ve been criss crossing the country since she was 4mo. I agree with all of the above advice. I wish I could still baby wear my daughter now ! Ha! having your hands free makes your flight so much easier. Most airlines (except southwest) will let you wear Chase during the flight. We usually gate check the stroller. It carries our diaper bag and any other extras that we might carry on. We also take aisle and middle seat so that if baby gets a little fussy you can walk the aisles easily. Don’t forget to pack an extra shirt for you! I forgot to pack one for myself and the 8hr flight to Antigua was barely bearable! Also most infant carseats can be installed w/o it’s base. Check your instruction manual and practice w/o before your trip. That just makes one less thing to pack! You guys will be fine. Just so you know with a baby your seat space feels really cramped. Fingers crossed that your flight isn’t full so you can spread out. Now that we have to buy a seat for the 2yo it’s like a luxury to share her space! We are flying from the west coast to NJ next week. I’ll be thinking of you!

My advice is: nurse. nurse. nurse. I miss having a baby to nurse and keep happy and sleepy. Toddlers are no joke on a plane.

Love it – welcome back to Denver!
Regarding the Bachelor… I have no idea why, but I’m totally on board #TeamUnicornJojo. She might be slightly crazy, but who isn’t on that show, right?! And in Denver, if you treck to the Highlands, you might just run into him in the wild, ha!

Hi Julie! My son is about a week younger than Chase, and we flew when he was six weeks old in September to Texas! Wright was a non-sleeper like Chase (especially at that time) so I was super nervous. I made sure to nurse him during take off (even if I had already nursed him earlier) and during landing. The amazing thing about airplanes is they are the ultimate “white noise.” Wright sleeps with white noise at home, so he was in heaven! He slept the entire 2 hour plane ride which was INSANE for him. It is a little awkward nursing on a plane, but I wore a cover obviously, and people will definitely appreciate a quiet baby more than caring that you are nursing. From what I have heard, the nursing helps their ears as well when the plane is ascending and descending. Of course, bring some toys too if he happens to be awake for any of it. He will do great!! Good luck!!
Madison Harrison says
Oh and a couple more things!
1. I brought my stroller and my car seat with me through security because you get to skip lines in security, and even if you carry him in the ergo, you can use the stroller to through your diaper bag in, carry on, etc. Also, I did not like the idea of checking my stroller and car seat and it getting messed up. If you take it through security, you can check it at the gate and they put it straight on the plane and then have it waiting for you when you get off! It is wonderful!
2. If he will be on baby food then, you can bring that through security as well if need to!
Brigid says
Just try to have a laid back attitude about the flight! Wear him in your ergo through security and onto the plane. And nurse him on take off/landing. But don’t stress if he doesn’t want to nurse, he’ll be fine! If you’re bringing a bottle just put it in a separate ziplock with an icepack and put it in it’s own bin through security. He’ll do great! 🙂
Julia says
You can stress yourself out and exhaust yourself out research in how to fly with a baby. Keep it simple, make the decision that seems will work for you and Chase and relax about it.
For me it was carrying as few items as possible, wearing A in the ergo, checking the car seat in a bag designed for that purpose and nursing a lot. I was surprised that we didn’t get to board early, but spending less time on the plane seemed to work out well for me.
Flying with someone under one is way easier than flying with a toddler! Enjoy it!
Melanie says
I am loving this season of the Bachelor! Ben seems like a good guy and very normal. I like Jubilee so far even though she has been pretty separated from the rest of the group.
Haha those pancakes– that always seems to happen to me! But you’re right, nothing a little peanut butter won’t fix 😉
Megan says
We flew with my son when he was about 9 months old. He was still nursing and I did not purchase a seat for him, he was a lap passenger. I would definitely check your airlines requirements for strollers if you are planning to bring one. We flew United Airlines and they have a max weight limit for gate checking strollers. They let you check it for free, but not at the gate. If you can get through security with your stroller and car seat I would recommend it. Baby wearing is great, but having the stroller definitely helped me transport my diaper bag and car seat. It also gave me a place to put my little guy when I needed to use the bathroom. Some TSA people make you take off your baby carrier going through security, some let you leave it on. I have had it both ways so be prepared for that. Generally, car seats have to go through the scanner on the conveyor belt and some TSA people will tell you the stroller does as well. My stroller had bigger wheels (a BOB) and they wanted me to take the wheels off so it would fit. I told them I was traveling alone and they let me push it through the vertical scanner instead. I changed my little guy’s diaper right before boarding was to start and I put an overnight diaper on him for max absorption and the hope that it would save me from any in flight diaper changes or blow outs. In my experience, airlines don’t let you board first just because you’re flying alone with a child so make sure you have gate checked everything you need to prior to boarding. I limited myself to the diaper bag and small cross body purse and it worked well. I nursed during both take off and landing which worked great and my little guy definitely caught some Z’s on the plane. Instead of a nursing cover, I wore a larger cardigan so I was able to fold one side over his head and my shoulder for a little privacy. I opted for a window seat to help with privacy as well. I also purchased some small toys he had never seen before so that fascinated him when he was awake. I packed a few spare outfits for him (in case of spit up, blow outs, or unexpected travel delays), about five more diapers than I thought I would ultimately need, and a spare shirt for myself in case any spit up/vomit ended up on me. Luckily, our travels were really smooth so most wasn’t needed, but luck generally favors the prepared so better to have it and not need it than the other way around! Sorry for the long winded comment and good luck!
Julie says
I didn’t think about the weight limit on strollers! Thank you!

Speaking of finding hair everywhere: one year my best friend’s son was crying all evening and she couldn’t figure out why. She literally could do nothing to sooth him and she was kinda freaking out about it. Anyway, she decides to give him a bath thinking maybe that would be calming for him. She took off his socks and one of her pieces of hair was wound tightly around his little toe to the point it was cutting off his circulation. She had to take him to the walk-in to have the hair cut because she couldn’t get it off! Crazy, right? I would never think of something like that happening.
Liz says
That happens to baby penises too! We see it in the ER. We call them hair tourniquets! If your baby ever cries nonstop for no reasons, check the toes, fingers, and penis 🙂

Hi Julie – I have been reading you blog for years and love it! Chase is absolutely adorable! … I had my son back in June, and I too had been experiencing extreme hairloss (I did for about a year post partum with my daughter too a few years back and nothing helped). Now, I am absolutely not trying to sell you anything, but since I was an It Works Global distributor I decided to give our all-natural keratin supplement that helps make hair grow and be stronger a try and it actually has helped me so much in the last few months! I just wanted to give you a heads up that there are all-natural plant-based products out there that can help that are safe while breastfeeding! I’m 8 months post-partum and still breastfeeding my son with this supplement and the hair loss has slowed and my son is thriving!
Annette@FitnessPerks says
Haha the ready or snot had me LOLing!
As for flying with a baby, he’s actually at a pretty great age to fly, so it shouldn’t be too bad! My biggest advice is to baby wear him in a carrier! Hands free & you don’t have to take him off through security (if he were in his carseat you would have to take him out, even if he was sleeping!) Also, give him a binkie or nurse him during takeoff & landing to help his ears.

I had the hair loss thing happen to me while I was pregnant which is rare but can happen! It was insane how much hair I was losing at all times. My husband had to clean out the shower drain after every shower it was so bad and there was no way my pregnant belly and I were bending over to clean it out!
Julie says
Definitely don’t check your car seat or stroller. I flew for the first time by myself back in October with my then 4 month old. I actually ended up springing for the first class upgrade since it wasn’t that much more. I tried to keep him up and active as much as possible before the flight, nursed him during takeoff and he slept the whole way.
Bring the ergo for sure! Before you get into the security lines, put him on so that you can quickly get everything done. It might be different in the south, I’m from NY and you’d be surprised how NOT helpful people are!!
Melissa says
I don’t have a baby, but my brother-in-law and wife do, and they’ve flown several times with her (the first time when she was about 6 weeks!). The thing that surprised me is that they said their plane had no changing table anywhere on it. I don’t know how you’d prepare for that, but be warned! Fortunately, they had a plane with a few empty seats, so they laid the baby out on a couple seats to change her. Good luck!
Christi says
Honestly, it makes me feel better to hear someone else say that some days you just feel like eating whatever you want. I have recently ate and entire container of B&J’s new Belgium ale flavor for dinner. Today in fact I ate two homemade chocolate chip cookies. I have gained about ten pounds since my wedding a little over a year ago and so want to lose it, but sometimes I just want to eat good food, and by that I mean sugar. 🙂 I know I am undermining all my tough workouts and hate myself for it but life is really difficult right now so I guess food is a comfort, which it ridiculous I know. Anyway, thanks for your honesty, this post made me feel a little better about myself. Although, you are so fit I doubt you often eat unhealthy. You really do look fantastic.

For the baby advice, give everyone on the plane little goody bags with notes stating that it is your baby’s first flight. How well your baby will take the plane ride? I’m not sure. Where are you headed to?

For your flying with a baby question…I know another Youtube Makeup Artist, bubzbeauty had her baby just last year and what she did was take her baby swimming to tire her baby out so he would sleep for the entire flight!

Hey Julie!!! I live in Denver. Wish I could meet you sometime, but I’m sure that could come across as creepy! Ha! I look forward to hearing about your Denver trip and hope it goes well.
Also, Ben from the Bachelor grew up in the next town over from me in Indiana and went to a school in my athletic conference. However, he is 5 or 6 years younger than me, so I never knew him. Oh, and get this… He lives in Denver now too! Crazy small world.
Anyways, take care!!!

I have advice for flying with a baby! Because of my crazy career, my 6 month old has been on SEVEN flights now (as in, actual flights and not trips), including one to Cancun!! So I feel fairly confident I have it down, at least with a baby. I was also extremely nervous and anxious before the first one, but *knock on wood* they have all gone smoothly.
First, I highly highly recommend you bring not only your stroller/car seat, but also a carrier (like the bjorn or whichever one you use) as well as a WRAP. The wrap is crucial for the actual flight as you can just sit with Chase in his baby wrap while sleeping on you for the duration of the flight. We have never purchased a seat for our daughter for the flights. The only thing is sometimes for takeoff and landing the flight attendants will ask you to take the wrap off, in which case I just untie it and “hold” her while she’s still wrapped up.
The wrap allows the baby to sleep comfortably while freeing up your hands. If I didn’t have the wrap, I think I would have a very very fussy baby on my hands. The carrier is just to entertain Chase while at the airport waiting for the flight.
Also, make sure for takeoff and landing you have a bottle or paci available in case there are ear pressure issues. My daughter has never had any and she’s also never really used either during those times, but just in case.
I would bring some infant Tylenol while on the plane/traveling just in case Chase gets ear pain or some sudden fever. Unlikely, but just in case.
If you’re flying southwest or one of you can board first, have that person take the carry ons and stroller/car seat to leave it at the end of the walkway (get the tag at the gate while you’re waiting to board). This way you just have the baby in your wrap and diaper bag to worry about.
Try to feed Chase right before boarding or after boarding and while waiting to take off. This way he’s at his maximal sleepiness. Something about the plane noise is soothing to little babies, I think, and helps them sleep.
Also, I know this is really difficult to predict, but if you can get a poop out of him before boarding you will save yourselves and Chase the headache of changing him in the dirty, tiny airplane bathrooms! That’s why sometimes feeding right before boarding is best because if they have a poopy diaper you can quickly change them before the flight. Bring gallon ziploc bags and extra grocery store plastic bags!!
There was one time everyone had boarded and I smelled it…we asked the flight attendant if we could change her right on the walkway plank thing outside of the plane and she let us!
Oh also bring extra changes of clothes in case of a diaper blowout and dress him in layers because with the extremes of heat/cold on planes with blasting heaters you may need to adjust accordingly.
This is probably super overkill, but hope it helps a little!! Don’t worry, Chase will be just fine. Luckily, my daughter has not gotten sick once (again, knock on wood) from a flight. Good luck!
Em says
Oh I should add, I only fly southwest and have always been allowed to carry my baby in her wrap- just have to untie at takeoff and landing.
Julie says
Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with me!!! I really appreciate it!!

I never get to take advantage of this because I’m a local, but Vea Kids (http://www.veakids.com/web_store/items) is right in DIA and rents high-quality baby gear — like-new car seats, fancy pack and plays, strollers, all of it. They’re local, new, and FABULOUS. Highly recommend checking them out instead of schlepping your stuff cross-country.
I’ve found it easiest to bring a stroller to carry stuff, then wear the baby through security and while boarding. You don’t have to unwrap the baby to go through security, but they will swab your hands. (You’ll also get to go through the regular machines, not the scanners, which, bonus.) Nurse him on the way up and the way down and pack 2 extra outfits for him and an extra shirt for you in your diaper bag. Bring the diapers you need for the flight and just buy the rest when you get here.
Also, people WILL help you. They’ll usually see a cute baby and offer if you’re struggling with anything! In my experience, babies are pretty easy on flights until they get mobile. It’ll be easy!
Steph says
I flew 8 times (1/2 of them solo) with my son before he turned 18 months. He was super fussy the first time we flew when he was 3 months old, but we made it! I agree with others: get an aisle seat, and aim to have your hands free in the airport by wearing him in the carrier (I bought a backpack for a diaper bag and liked that). Nurse him as much as you can in the flight. Mine always nursed on take off, slept for 20 minutes, and then didn’t want to nurse again on landing. Get an aisle seat so you don’t feel trapped and can walk the aisles if he needs to move. Just know that the kindness of strangers totally shines when you fly solo with a baby. I had people hold my son while he cried, help me make bottles when he’d stopped nursing, play peek a boo with him for an hour, etc. And most importantly, remember: even if he cries the whole time (which even with my fussy boy never happened, and won’t happen to you!), your time on the plane is finite! It won’t last forever, and you’ll never see those people again. Good luck!
Betsy says
When I flew with my daughter, I wanted her to take her bottle at take off and landing but she wouldn’t. I ended up using a medicine dropper filled with apple juice and I squirted little drops in every few seconds. It kept her distracted and helped her ears pop so they wouldn’t hurt. I highly recommend it!
Julie says
Oh that’s so creative! Chase sometimes refuses to nurse/take a bottle, so I like this idea!

First, I am loving the Bachelor this year! My husband and I both picked Lauren B. to win.
Second, while I am not a mom yet, I will always remember the story my mom told me about her first flight with my twin sister and I. We were about the same age as Chase, flying without my dad, and while she packed extra diapers and clothes for us, she forgot to pack extras for herself! Needless to say, we both proceeded to throw up all over her! So definitely pack a spare t-shirt for yourself, just in case!

Follow everyone’s advice on preparation for flying with Chase BUT keep in mind that the experience could truly go in one of many different directions. And if things don’t go perfectly that’s ok. There will be some annoyed people on the plane but also plenty of understanding parents! Now for my advice… I always bring something I know my child will eat/drink/suck on for take off and landing. If chase takes a pacifier that would work. I personally buy coconut water and use that because I know my son will drink it. The purpose of this is to prevent ear pain with the change in pressure as you ascend and descend. Ear pain really is the worst for anyone! Hope this helps ?

I really really loved this random thoughts post, these are so fun! Obviously I’m commenting too late for the baby-flight advice, but I hope your trip went well. I’m sure your visit with friends was fun! And Colorado is so beautiful and SUNNY. That’ll cheer a person right up. I love seeing your protein pancake jumble, it gives me encouragement for my protein pancake imperfections. I was joyfully starting a vacation with my husband on the day you posted this, so it’s kind of fun to come back in town and have a bunch of blog posts to catch up on! Love it! I too wondered about Sadie’s birthday chicken challenge (Happy belated b-day, Sadie!) Always fun to watch. And for some reason I’m not into The Bachelor this season as much as I normally am – I don’t know why. I’m a big fan but this season, eh. Might be because all the contestants are so young (early 20’s) and they therefore have less stories to share during their one-on-one conversations. Unsure! Hope you had a great trip!
