One way to put a little extra pep in your step in the morning is to schedule an evening flight to one of the most exciting and dynamic cities in the world! I’m off to New York City late this evening, but since my flight isn’t until after dinnertime, I have plenty of time to have a somewhat normal work day.
Which also means that I had time to get in a good workout this morning.
Workout
My workout began with 20 minutes on the elliptical beside Ryan. We were both feeling extra chatty this morning which made the time fly by. On some mornings I will grab a magazine and he’ll watch ESPN and we’ll say all of five things to each other because we’re still waking up, but today we had a lot to say… including yet again noticing Adele blaring on the radio two times within the 45 minutes we were at the gym. They’re going to ruin “Set Fire to the Rain” for me soon enough and I absolutely love that song.
After ellipticizing (it’s a word, don’t worry about it), it was time for an upper body workout.
I loosely followed my arms ‘n’ abs workout from Tuesday without quite the same intensity since I have plans to take a new-to-me exercise class in New York tomorrow with my friends and don’t want to be too sore going into it.
Breakfast
This morning I wasn’t sure what I wanted for breakfast. I was feeling quite indecisive and opted for an egg, cheese and raspberry jelly bagelwich.
Some of you have asked about what kind of bagels I prefer to use. I’m not picky in the least and typically buy whatever is on sale, whether it be bakery bagels from Publix, Alternative Bagels or Thomas’ bagels. I just try to buy whole wheat bagels and am pretty easy to please.
Along with my egg sandwich, I also had a small bowl of cashews for some healthy fats.
Tights or No Tights?
Yesterday I took to Twitter to ask some packing advice. I have a dress to wear on Saturday night in New York City and wasn’t sure whether or not women in New York wore tights underneath dresses or were hardcore and simply braved the cold with bare legs.
I felt like a dork asking such a simple question, but in Florida, tights-free legs are basically acceptable year-round since it never gets that cold.
Just about 90 percent of the responses encouraged me to wear tights unless I want my legs to turn into frozen blocks and fall off within 10 minutes.
My favorite response came from Ashley…
Ha!
I know it sounds completely silly and frivolous, but as a Floridian, it’s kind of hard to decide what to pack to wear in frigid temperatures while still looking semi-dressy for a fun night out.
When I hear that it’s going to be 30 degrees in Florida, I am completely bundled up in everything I own, but I’d look like some kind of a bag lady if I dressed that way in New York among the people who are used to the cold.
That’s cute downtown attire, no? (Let’s not forget that I was wearing that ridiculous outfit when I was unexpectedly interviewed on the news. Awesome.)
My bag is 80 percent packed, so I only have a few last-minute things to add before heading out!
Bess @ Bess Be Fit says
Good thing your flight is later this evening, the weather here is horrible right now! Pouring rain and I heard flights were delayed up to an hour…but its supposed to clear out by 2 or 3 so you should be fine!
peanutbutterfingers says
eek! yeah, i don’t leave until the evening. hopefully everything is okay by then!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Have fun in NYC–oh that city is SO fun!! Which new exercise class are you going to go to?
I love bagels…..mmmmm I’ve heard the ones in NYC are pretty fantastic!
peanutbutterfingers says
physique 57. i can’t wait to try it!
Christina Marie says
Have fun!! I tried to take a Physique 57 class in LA last Oct, but it was full.
Kimberly says
ahh my friend does that, so jealous, she said it is amazing and her arms are ripped from it!
You can always tights here, its going to be warmer than normal which is great. But the good thing is you can wear any color your want since its NYC and no matter someone else will be dressed crazier than you.
j. says
It’s an amazing class. I have both sets of DVD’s and absolutely LOVE it. It tightens and tones like you never thought possible. I swear by it.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I’m so jealous you’re going to New York. It really is one of my favorite places! Have a fabulous trip and good luck staying warm! 🙂
Nicole says
have so much fun! nyc is the best 🙂
HRCK the Herald says
I struggle with the tights thing too– I think it always makes me look more casual, but it’s truly not an option a lot of the time in winter up here.
I say “ellipticate”– totally a word as well 🙂
HAVE FUN!!
Shana says
I love ny so much. Going for a weekend in february just to take a baking class =) (I live in DC) You’re going to have a blast!
Geneva says
I’m a major cold weather wimp. I typically wear underarmour and tights under jeans, and two pairs of tights under skirts or dresses in the winter. It doesn’t get too cold in NC but by the way I dress you would think I was in Alaska.
Maribeth says
Be prepared for physique 57!! It’ll be that Ron burgundy deep burn!
I usually wear super thick tights when I go out in the winter and when I’m inside I roll it up and put it I’m my bag. Sometimes it gets too hot and i want to pretend I’m in 80 degree weather.
Some girls brave the weather Especially when they cab it, but I think they’re stupid to stand in under 30 degree weather without a coat or covering their legs.
Weathers supposed to be nice this weekend so enjoy! It’s the most amazing city in the world.
Maribeth says
Ps- if you’re a heel whimp like me, keep a pair of flats in your bag! It’ll be a lifesaver after dancing for 5 hous
Lindsey says
I hate tights but they’re really in style right now.
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
Woohoo, I’m excited on your behalf! Haha. 🙂 We’re supposed to get fairly mild weather in NYC this weekend (mid-40s…well, mild for us!), so you might not have to look like a total Eskimo. Besides, patterned tights are such a fun accessory!
Jessica @brighteyesandbushytales says
Can’t wait to hear about physique 57! Barre method is super popular in Chicago right now and I have been loving it! 🙂 would love to try physique sometime!
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
I’ve heard that Physique 57 is hardcore! Can’t wait to hear what you think! Oh, and I vote for tights! A cute way to stay warm!
Faith @ For the Health of It says
I had to laugh – anytime it drops below 60 here in FL I act like a baby and bundle up in 87 layers, but the 17 degree weather in NYC was actually nice! I was still chilly, but not “Ohmahgaw Im gonna die” like I do here in the south. Makes no sense!
Jennifer says
I’m from and live in NYC and I want to tell you that most women wear tights, including this girl! As long as your shoes and dress are awesome, no one will judge you ha!
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
you are actually very lucky and coming to the east coast when we are getting some warm weather for this time of year, it is supposed to be sunny and around 50 degrees on saturday!
Also if you have time my aunt helps sell bread at the Union Square market it is finnish rye bread and it is soo good! You should check it out
Elisabeth says
Ahhhh…to live in Florida in the winter! I’m in northwestern Ohio & hate winter/snow/everything that comes with it. I swear every year that I’ll move to Florida so I can just skip winter…but have yet to do it. Maybe some day 😉
Bee Goes Bananas says
Have fun in NY! I’ve always wanted to go!
Heather says
everytime you feel a chill in NYC, just repeat after me:
“i am a child of the windy city. i am a child of the windy city. this is in my blood [though my blood has probably thinned in Florida. but i digress.] i am a child of a windy city.”
Chi-town girls UNITE! 😉 xo
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Have fun in NYC! There are girls I see out here in Chicago wearing tall heels, tiny skirts and no tights… and I think they are crazy. Tights can be fun, especially if you get textured or patterned ones!
Emily N says
My workout also consisted of 20 minutes of elliptical followed by upper body strength.
Hope you figured out packing!
Brigitte says
If you want to have a great whole wheat bagel in NYC, try to make it to Brooklyn Bagel on 8th Ave between 24th St and 25th St (not actually in Brooklyn :)) They are the BEST bagels in NYC, hands down!
Heather H. @ Run Eat Play says
Awesome looking bagelwich and NY?! I’m jealous! Have a great time!
Catherine says
Have fun! If you see a restaurant (I think there are 2 locations) called Toasties- get a sandwich there for lunch! You have to get the one called The Alice with turkey (its not the nasty deli meat kind) green apple, cheese and honey mustard. I swear it is the best sandwich I have ever had 🙂
Also- if you have some back hose (sounds nerdy, I know) but they work under a black dress in the cold if you dont want solid black tights. You can go grab a pair at the grocery or pharmacy if you dont have any.
Catherine says
JK- there are 6 locations!
Traci says
Well at least you hit a lucky weekend here (I live in NJ, 25 minutes outside NYC). There’s a high of 50 tomorrow during the day! At night, however…more like 30. I’ll echo everyone else: PLEASE wear tights! It’s actually very common for girls here to wear dresses with black tights and heels or high heeled boots in the winter. I think people would actually look at you like you were crazy if you forgo the tights, haha! Don’t get me wrong, there are always a few girls who take cabs not wearing tights but everyone looks at them like they’re crazy. 🙂 Also, most people wear warm coats (like peacoats or wool coats) out at night, and the bars usually have a coat check where you take a number and they take your coat off your hands for the night. Have fun!!
Traci says
Oh, and it’s POURING and foggy here right now so good thing you didn’t spend the day today and are taking a later flight!
cheryl says
i lived in Boston for 4y (after 4 in ATL) and found people looked lovely after delayering but plenty just went with WARM for the commute rather than CUTE. i gave in and got a puffy long jacket and stopped crying from the cold walk….just needed a moment in the ladies to de-hat-hair etc
Lindsey says
Have a fun & safe trip!! Up in Canada right now its like minus a bazillion so I do not dare go out in tights 😉 haha.
Sabrina says
I went to manahattan over christmas break and seriously half the girls there wear only tights and the high ugg boots.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Have fun in NY! I’ve never been so I’m excited to see what you get up to! 🙂 And smart idea to wear tights – I’d be bundling up too!
Heather says
I like to wear tights with knee high boots or heeled booties if I go out in the winter (in NYC) but tights are definitely appropriate. You’ll see people wearing really creative and unusual ones too.
And you don’t look silly in the winter gear. Everyone looks like that 🙂
Have a wonderful time! I’ve lived in NYC my whole life and I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Even when I go on vacation, I can’t wait to go home.
Molly says
ahhh! have the BEST time in NYC!
allison says
While i dont miss the cold northern weather, i do miss all the extra clothes i got to buy;)
Most definitely wear tights! Black is standard but depending on your dress color you could always go with a fun color:)
Angela @ Health, Happiness & Harmony says
Have fun! I live an hour outside of NYC and a night out is always a good time!
Sarah says
Have a great time tromping around the city I call home. Please post if you decide to do a blogger meet-up! I’d certainly be game. Oh, and bring an umbrella. It’s a rainy day and tomorrow looks the same….or just bring that florida sunshine with you 🙂
Katy Widrick says
I’m so freaking annoyed — the new BodyPump release includes an Adele song and IT’S A COVER! For me, Adele is uncoverable. Either get the rights to the real song or pick something else.
Rant over.
Paula @ lipstick and lunges says
You Floridians are so spoiled! It’s way easier to dress well in warm weather, but you can still look cute up here in the Northeast tundra. Tights, sexy boots, and a form fitting sweater dress are all you need!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
i totally know what you mean about not really knowing how to dress up while staying warm… i’m from arizona, and i just recently moved to salt lake area a little over a year ago, and i’m still trying to figure out the dressing for cold weather thing! haha it can be tricky if you’re not used to it. i say go for the tights! just think gossip girl. 😉
Theresa says
have fun in NYC!! if it makes you feel better, i live in this area and dress like a bag lady to brave the cold all the time…sometimes its torturous!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Hope you have a great time in the city. It’s supposed to be beautiful during the day (by NYC in January standards) this weekend!
Emily says
Hi Julie,
Can’t wait to hear about your trip to New York and about P57! I have been doing the DVD’s for Two years now and have gain amazing strength, flexibility and leaned out! The burn is crazy but it “hurts so good” ;0)
Enjoy P57!
Hopefully one day it will make its way over to Toronto =0)
Rachel @ The Avid Appetite says
Definitely tights! The best part about New York is that anything goes! Just be yourself and have comfortable shoes for getting around 🙂 Have a great time! You are lucky because it’s pretty warm here right now!!
Susie says
You need to wear tights. I agree with the lady of the night comment–also people will just snub their noses at you like, “what is SHE trying to prove???” I hope that the clouds and rain have cleared up by the time that you get here–flying into NYC is a great experience. The best last piece of advice I can give you is to wear what you want and to hell with the rest! How else are you going to be able to enjoy being out all night if you are freezing and uncomfortable??
Jen@FoodFamilyFitness says
The lady of the night comment has me laughing right now! Have a great time in NYC!!!!
Erica says
Hey there! I hope you have fun while you are here in NYC. Just so you know, bring tights! Its freezing and pouring. Us NYC ladies don’t bare our legs in the winter!
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
Have a great time while you’re here!!! Also, tights ARE a must, but this weekend won’t be *that* cold. Normally, this time of year, it’s witch’s you-know-what cold.
Carol @ Lucky Zucca says
Have fun in NYC Julie!! Safe travels!
Britne @ Shabbott's Habits says
I’m a New Yorker and I totally wear tights when it’s cold. That being said, you will see people going without, but I would say that if you’re not hitting a club, then it’s perfectly acceptable to cover those legs up from the cold! Also, keep in mind that it’s gonna be a great weekend here in NYC – partly sun w/highs near 50. It’s no FL weather, but for us, that’s pretty great! Enjoy the City! If you get a chance check out Babbo, Red Farm (a new place in the West Village that is AWESOME!), Tasti D-lite (yeah its artificial, but its fantastic for 100 calories), Levain Bakery (NYC’s best chocolate chip cookie), and the Little Owl (fantastic bistro burger!). They are some of my favorites 🙂
elizabeth @ the kitchen counsel says
i love wearing tights when its cold–and it doesn’t get that cold here in new orleans! have so much fun on your trip. new york is absolutely one of my favorite cities in the world.
elvina says
Julie have fun in New York! You should try Core fusion class in Exhale Spa or Bar method- those classes are fun!

You’re in luck! It doesn’t look like there will be any below freezing temperatures here over the weekend. Today is crazy (in a good way); it’s almost 60!
