One way to put a little extra pep in your step in the morning is to schedule an evening flight to one of the most exciting and dynamic cities in the world! I’m off to New York City late this evening, but since my flight isn’t until after dinnertime, I have plenty of time to have a somewhat normal work day.
Which also means that I had time to get in a good workout this morning.
Workout
My workout began with 20 minutes on the elliptical beside Ryan. We were both feeling extra chatty this morning which made the time fly by. On some mornings I will grab a magazine and he’ll watch ESPN and we’ll say all of five things to each other because we’re still waking up, but today we had a lot to say… including yet again noticing Adele blaring on the radio two times within the 45 minutes we were at the gym. They’re going to ruin “Set Fire to the Rain” for me soon enough and I absolutely love that song.
After ellipticizing (it’s a word, don’t worry about it), it was time for an upper body workout.
I loosely followed my arms ‘n’ abs workout from Tuesday without quite the same intensity since I have plans to take a new-to-me exercise class in New York tomorrow with my friends and don’t want to be too sore going into it.
Breakfast
This morning I wasn’t sure what I wanted for breakfast. I was feeling quite indecisive and opted for an egg, cheese and raspberry jelly bagelwich.
Some of you have asked about what kind of bagels I prefer to use. I’m not picky in the least and typically buy whatever is on sale, whether it be bakery bagels from Publix, Alternative Bagels or Thomas’ bagels. I just try to buy whole wheat bagels and am pretty easy to please.
Along with my egg sandwich, I also had a small bowl of cashews for some healthy fats.
Tights or No Tights?
Yesterday I took to Twitter to ask some packing advice. I have a dress to wear on Saturday night in New York City and wasn’t sure whether or not women in New York wore tights underneath dresses or were hardcore and simply braved the cold with bare legs.
I felt like a dork asking such a simple question, but in Florida, tights-free legs are basically acceptable year-round since it never gets that cold.
Just about 90 percent of the responses encouraged me to wear tights unless I want my legs to turn into frozen blocks and fall off within 10 minutes.
My favorite response came from Ashley…
Ha!
I know it sounds completely silly and frivolous, but as a Floridian, it’s kind of hard to decide what to pack to wear in frigid temperatures while still looking semi-dressy for a fun night out.
When I hear that it’s going to be 30 degrees in Florida, I am completely bundled up in everything I own, but I’d look like some kind of a bag lady if I dressed that way in New York among the people who are used to the cold.
That’s cute downtown attire, no? (Let’s not forget that I was wearing that ridiculous outfit when I was unexpectedly interviewed on the news. Awesome.)
My bag is 80 percent packed, so I only have a few last-minute things to add before heading out!

Thanks for a good morning laugh! Have fun in NYC! 😉
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
Have fun! NYC is the best. And don’t forget a Crumbs cupcake!
Lindsey @ Happy or Hungry says
Oh yes, tights for sure! Who doesn’t love looking like a lady of the night though?
I think you should just sport that outfit you’re wearing in the last picture…definitely perfect sexy bar night attire 🙂
Have a great flight! I would probably be so excited I would get NOTHING done all day long.
Brittney says
I love NYC so much! I can’t wait to hear all about your trip and see pictures and pretend I went with you 🙂
Tights are probably necessary unless you know you can just hop from a cab and walk two feet to your destination.
Have fun!
Susan - Nurse on the Run says
Hopefully the rain we’re having goes away! Have a great time while you’re here…best city in the world. 🙂
Joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
I’m flying to NYC today as well!!! I’m going for the weekend to visit my dad.. email me if you want to grab some coffee. 🙂
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Ha, love that tweet!! Btw–you have totally inspired me with all of your egg-cheese-jam sandwiches. I used to be really wary of the jam addition but since I’ve tried it I can’t get enough!
peanutbutterfingers says
LOVE them! so glad you’re a fan, too!

After all the debates in my head for weeks now I decided to make a version of overnight oats. I love love love my warm oatmeal in the morning and the idea of cold oats was really not settling well for me. However since the past couple days have been in the 70s I decided I didn’t need extra warmth in the morning and put some oats soaked in almond milk in the frig last night for the morning! After adding my fixings I will say that I completely enjoyed it which I didn’t question but did not miss the warmth! Thanks for the reappearing overnight oats to keep reminding me to just give it a try. Of course a perfect world would have been you enjoying overnight oats too but alas I wasted to tell you right away! Thank you. Overnight oats will be a summer go to!
Enjoy NY. Eat warm things since it is freezing!

Since you’re not a native floridian though I’m sure you have some idea of what to wear, I’d be more worried about a native leaving FL for the first time!
Bri says
Make sure you try a NYC bagel, nothing like ’em! There’s so much to do in the city, there’s no way to not have fun!
Linz @ Itz Linz says
that’s so funny and a hilarious response about the tights. i understand because i am from st louis and just yesterday came to san diego for a mini vacay so i had a similar dilemma in what to bring because of the diff temps.. unfortunately for me, i’m not used to the warm weather in mid january! lucky!
Nicole says
Its supposed to be warm (well for NYC!) this weekend..but most girls here wear black tights and black heels/boots seems to be the trend and its really cute. Definitely don’t go without tights, you don’t want to be ‘that girl’ haha..enjoy your trip!
Kristi @ SimplyKristi says
Too funny about being caught in an outfit you wish wouldn’t be seen. Last night I went to my parents house, and we took their dog for a walk. It was raining so I grabbed the first hat I saw (which happened to be a big, white knit thing that looked so terrible on me.) Well, of course, the walk where we usually see no one – we saw a ton of people. Neighbors, other people walking and even my best friends mom drove by…figures! I was like, whats next? a marching band? lol I learned my lesson though (I hope!).
peanutbutterfingers says
hahaha love it 🙂
Leslie @ Body Won't Break says
I live in Oklahoma so it gets a little cold here. Sometimes really cold. I have to wear tights at time even though I’m not a fan. I always get runs in my tights and half the time my dress clings to the tights. So I go without tights as much as possible.
Catie says
Hey there!
I’m an NYC reader and excited to hear that you’ll be touring the city this weekend! Funny that you were having this dilemma…Im having the same one about a party tonight! I got excited to go sans tights when I saw the weather earlier this week, but looks like its going to be colder than predicted 🙁 People definitely wear lots of black tights and black tights with patterns (these feel a little less ‘business’ to me) Enjoy your weekend!

Get ready for your quads to HATE HATE HATE you after Physique 57! You definitely need tights in NYC this time of year…it’s freezing to walk around otherwise! When I first moved to the city three years ago I’d go out clubbing with bare legs, sandals and a miniskirt in January. Then one night it started snowing. I learned my lesson.
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Omigosh, have such an amazing time in NYC! I was there earlier this month and had a blast! I’m so impressed that you are mostly packed too! My packing anxiety usually leaves me packing at the last minute! And I think good call with wearing the tights- add a pair of booties and your look is complete!
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
Have a great time! I love the city – from Long Island but at school in Alabama. There’s always something to do!
Jenny says
I usually never wear nylons out since typically once your inside its always warm – I do wear dark tights alot though! Spices up an outfit too 🙂 In other news, it’s supposed to hit 60 today so you might be in luck!
Carly @ Cooking With Carly says
I always say ellipticizing- definitely a word 😉 . If you have time to try out another exercise class, I’ve heard SoulCycle spin classes are amazing. I wanted to go to one on our honeymoon but ran out of time. Have a great trip!
Tori @Toning Up With Tori says
Mmmm, your bagelwich looks good! I just had a Jimmy Dean D-Light Bagelwich this morning and it was so yummy!
Julie says
Hey Julie, thanks so much for sharing what kind of bagels you like. I love to buy what’s on sale too, whole wheat sesame being my favorite.
Are your bagels mini or regular sized? I’d like some tips on weight maintenance and I could never look like you eating bagels daily…
peanutbutterfingers says
have you tried alternative bagels? they’re not mini bagels, but aren’t quite as huge as regular bagels. i think they’d be right up your alley!
Khushboo says
Ok I’m not jealous at all…ha who am I kidding! Have a great weekend, I hope bagels are on the menu- you must in NYC!
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
Have fun!!! Yes wear tights! 🙂
Jamie aka "Sometimes Healthy" Girl says
So cool that you’re coming here to NYC! What will you be here for?
peanutbutterfingers says
just visiting a friend!
Lisa says
Pack an umbrella. Up north it’s wet and chilly. I’m 30 min. by train into the city. The sun is just starting to poke its head out. Have a great time. Take advantage of everything NYC has to offer. And by that I mean pizza and bagels. They are the best. Have fun and stay safe.
Mallory @ Have your cake says
i was in nyc last weekend and itw as ABSOLUTELY FREEZING! but this weekend is supposed to be warmer. tights are always in for NYC girls! def wear em!
Mila @ loftyappetite says
Tights are one of the trendiest things this season! In every color of the rainbow, you totally gotta add them to make your outfit more fun AND stay warm! Win-Win situation! Have fun!
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
Have fun in New York!! I have never been, but after all of the 30 Rock I watch I have added it my list of top places to go. Can’t wait to hear all about the trip!
P.S. I haven’t been reading long enough to have already read about the getting unexpectedly interviewed on the news in your bundled-up outfit. Too funny!
TeenyLittleSuperChef says
Haha, that picture of you all bundled up because it got down to 30 degrees is hi.lar.i.ous! I wish it would get that warm here. I would be wearing my shorts and a t-shirt. Of course I would be sweating my batooty off if it got above 80 degrees, so I guess it’s all relative. I wouldn’t know whether to wear tights in the NYC either. I’m glad someone suggested to wear them so as not to be confused with a hooker. Good advice 🙂
Clara says
Did changing your weights routine to focusing on one body part at a time change your body in anyway. Like did you gain any weight or become more toned?
Hannah @PalmBeachRunner says
Love the sweet/ salty combo of jam on an egg sandwich! Looks yummy!
Carrie says
Is that a mini or regular sized bagel?
Chels R. says
Haha too funny! Love me some tights under dresses…I have been wearing mine out lately! So cute esp w/ boots!
Have a great time in NY!
Alyssa says
You are all so brave, in the mornings at my 5:30 am bootcamp it’s barely 70 degrees and I’m shivering. It may also be weird that I wear tights under my dresses every night time outing I attend and I live in Hawai’i!
Random too, but Julie – last night I was reading old blog posts and my boyfriend asks “who’s that on the screen?” and I just nonchalantly said to him, “oh, that’s Julie and Sadie.” He assumes you’re a friend of mines since he says I talk about you like I know you personally!
Molly @ the lab mouse says
I know you’ve now packed and probably left, but in case anyone else needs similar advice, wear the tights! Everyone does, I can’t think of any normal situation (barring something like an interview at a law firm or a wedding) where they are not dressy enough.
black tights + black shoes + basically any dress/skirt/tunic = my insta-chic everyday winter outfit.
Kelly @foodiefresh says
I agree with Ashley. Maybe it’s a Southern lady thing, but in my family, you definitely wear tights/hosiery during a certain time of the year — mid to late fall through the winter — no matter what the weather. It’s considered proper and right up there with no white after Labor Day. But we have a lot of silly rules about being proper too. 🙂
Kathy says
I think it is hysterical when us northerners come down to vaca in Florida. In the early morning it can be a “bit” chilly. I look out and see Floridians in heavy coats, hats and gloves. I put on my shorts and go out for a walk. I take advantage of 40 or 50 degrees when its about 10 degrees up north. Today we have a balmy 50 which is exceptional for the end of January.
