Sadie is such a trooper.
I took her to the vet’s office right when they opened this morning and the woman at the front desk told me Sadie was scheduled for one of the first surgeries of the day. (First up? A bunny getting neutered, which I found oddly comical.)
I came home and did my best to study while I waited to hear back.
I made simple summer chili for lunch (I used turkey instead of lean ground beef) and ate it with Snapea Crisps.
I first tried Snapea Crisps at Katy’s baby shower. File them under “things that shouldn’t taste good but somehow do.”
After lunch it was time to pick up the little patient.
The vet said Sadie did great and that everyone got a kick out of her before surgery. They called her “Slink” because she kept acting feeble before they even did anything to her. I guess Sadie shares my fear of all things medical.
Because of where Sadie’s stitches are, the vet said she didn’t need to wear a cone, but recommended that we put her in a t-shirt if we leave her alone so she doesn’t scratch at the area.
She is definitely still feelin’ the meds, because she is currently staring straight down at a blanket on the couch.
I plan to stay by her side and study on the couch while she slowly returns to normal.
Her eyes are droopy and watery and she’s drifting in and out of sleep. I’m giving her lots of love and told her about all of your kind well-wishes.
I really must sincerely thank all of you for your amazing kindness. I know Sadie is “just a dog,” but she truly feels like a furry member of the Fagan family and adds so much joy to my life that I hate to see her in any pain. She’s doing so well, and I’m very hopeful that the biopsy results will help shed more light on what exactly is going on in her little body and give us a course of action to take to get her healthy! As always, I promise to keep you in the loop. We were told we’d hear more within a week.
Off to study and give Sadie some love. Thank you again for your warm wishes. You guys are the best!

No such thing as “just a dog”!! Pets ARE members of our family. Feel better soon, Sadie!
Danielle says
People without dogs are the ones that don’t understand that they are a family member. My Toby is definitely my son and people think I am crazy…oh well. Hope she gets better soon!! Best of luck!
Haley @ The Saucy Apple says
Oh my goodness! Just look at that face. I want to hug her through the computer screen. That or give her some turkey. She’d probably prefer that latter.
Natalie Kirbo says
No such thing as “just a dog!” My pup Harold is slowly but surely recovering well, and we are both sending you and Sadie hugs from Georgia where we are recovering and studying just like y’all. 🙂
Trish says
Positive thoughts and prayers for Sadie!
Debbie says
Sorry for Sadie and you guys for having to go through this. The waiting is one of the hardest things too! I am hoping they can take care of this bump and make Sadie get back to normal as quick as possible! Positive thoughts to you!
Carlene says
As a mother of 4 – 4 legged babies its hard to see them this way. I hope she has a speedy recovery and doesnt scratch at the stiches.
Its funny i first started reading your blog for the fitness and nutrition part of it. Not knowing that you have a love for fur babies too. I truly enjoy reading about all of it.
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
thank you so much, carlene. 🙂 big hugs to your furry family members, too!
Danielle says
Thinking of you and Sadie!! I know how upset I get when my puppy Harper is sick, so I’m wishing you well and a quick and complete recovery!!
Kara says
I must say that (in reference to your quotation marks), I’ve never understood the saying “just a dog”. Dogs are truly family members and our lives wouldn’t be the same without them. You go and give Sadie all the love and care she deserves and me and my pups are sending best wishes her way 🙂
Amy H. @ Run with Perseverance says
I’m glad to hear that they removed the spot, and I hope that’s all y’all will have to deal with! That picture of Sadie with the droopy eyes is so funny, yet sad at the same time.
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
oh i know. i texted a picture of her post-surgery to my family and it really is so sad and pathetic that you can’t help but smile at her little droopy eyes.
Sherry says
Please do not apologize for loving your dog! Just a dog, indeed. I know our Sadie is a loved family member and I can see that your Sadie is the same. Hope she feels better.
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
Glad to hear she is doing well! I have a dog too so I can totally relate…it’s so sad to see them in pain, they are so helpless. You are doing the right thing 🙂
Shell says
Have you and Ryan considered pet insurance? We have 2 policies on our 2 dogs, and it’s pretty cheap per month and gives us peace of mind in case we were to take our dogs to vet/surgery. We thought it was ridiculous at first, until we paid for the first $1000 bill after our dog had eaten something toxic. P.S. Dog was fine, insurance was purchased.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
Yes! Do you mind me asking who you use and whether or not you’re happy with them?
Shell says
Yep, we use PetFirst. We are happy with them. We pay about $24/month. The insurance is basically a reimbursement program. You pay for the vet bill, print and sign a claim form with receipt, and they mail you a check back for 90% back. (or whatever percentage that you picked on your insurance plan)
You can alter the coverage, deductible, etc. just like auto insurance. You can set it up for emergencies only (like us) or you can include stuff like heartworm meds, vaccinations…but that will of course, make your premium higher. I highly recommend pet insurance; it helps with peace of mind, and esp since poor Sadie might need future surgeries if this is common for her. Good luck!
Nicole @ Fruit 'N' Fitness says
I have Bentley insured and it has really helped to cover all of his allergy medications. He’s with PetFirst too and I have been very happy with them!
Jem says
Keepying Sadie in my thoughts and prayers! My husband and I have a “dog child” as well and I cannot imagine how difficult it must be! I hope you manage okay while waiting for the results!
Erin says
Poor puppy! I’m glad to hear surgery went well. Sending positive vibes to Miss Sadie. And for the record, we treat our pets like family members too 🙂
Alexis says
Poor little Sadie!!!! I’m praying for her and hope she has a quick recovery!
Nicole @ Fruit 'N' Fitness says
Aw poor Sadie that sad face just breaks my heart. I am glad to hear that she is out of surgery! I know that Bentley is ‘just a dog’ to many but feel that our animals are a very special part of our lives. Sadie is lucky to have parents who love and care for her as much as you and Ryan.
Lisa says
Awe, those droopy eyes! Before we got our English Bulldog puppy, Tortuga, I probably would have been in the “just a dog” camp, but now that she’s been a part of our family for almost four months I can’t imagine a day without her and would do anything to make sure she was happy and healthy! Sending Sadie lots of love and benign-results prayers! (and paw pumps from Tortuga)
colleen says
Poor Sadie!!! Her droopy, sleepy eyes make me want to just snuggle her.
I know how you feel about her being sick 🙁 Even though my dog (a lab) hasn’t had anything MAJOR wrong with him, I still worry when he gets the littlest bit sick. They’re family members!
Erica says
Awww I am glad she is back home with you! Sadie is not “just a dog”!!! She is your fur baby!!! She is a member of your family and very special too you! If anything happened to my little Muffin I would be heart broken! Last summer when she got sick with an infection I cried so much…It is truly terrifying feeling helpless for them. When my cat Oscar passed away I got his paw print tattooed on my arm. Clearly I don’t buy into the “just a pet” way of thinking.
Animals bring unconditional love into our lives and in many cases bring us a level of friendship other humans aren’t capable of!
Hang in the Julie and Ryan….Sadie will be her normal funny self ASAP!!!
Nikki says
Get well soon Sadie!! Our Hana will be having a lump looked this Friday as well. Like you, our Boxers are our kids (furkids)!
Annette@FitnessPerks says
Hope she gets well soon!!! poor thing 🙁
Marcie says
Awww, she looks so pitiful with her droopy eyes and lowered head….poor baby girl. She is definately more than just a dog and can fill your heart with more love than you ever thought possible. I am glad to hear that the surgery went well and am sending well wishes for her speedy recovery. She’s got this! 🙂
Melissa says
Pets are totally a family member. I’d be worried sick too if my kitty wasn’t feeling well!
Ashlee says
I feel so bad for Sadie and her droppy little eyes BUT since I know she’s probably feeling super good with all of the meds, I can’t help but laugh at her “drunk face” lol. Get better soon Sadie!!
Mary says
Even when she’s not well she has personality plus. That picture is so sweet. Been waiting for your post to see how she did. Wishing her all the best
Christina says
AW poor sadie! I have to say…that picture of her with the big red eyes all droopy reminds me of myself when I have a hangover! she will be ok…she is a little trooper! keeping her and you guys in my thoughts and prayers <3
LiseyB says
Prayers for sweet Sadie.
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Oh she is not “just a dog”! No dog is, they’ve all got their own amazing personalities, not to mention so much love to give! I definitely laughed a little at Sadie’s droopy face, she’s too cute! And maybe that blanket said something rude to her so they needed to have a stare-off? You never know…
Patty says
Awww, poor Sadie! Glad the surgery went well and hope the results come back well also. My last dog had to be sedated one time because she had been hit by a car (luckily only her toe was broken) but when we went to pick her up she was still loopy from the meds. She fell asleep on the floor of the vet’s office while we were paying and I had to carry her out to the car. Of course the meds wore off about 3am and she was wide awake waking me up!
Ashley says
I’m so glad to hear you have Sadie back! Her droopy eyes instantly brought tears to my eyes. She will bounce right back! My dog is my best friend. Seriously, I’ve had a couple neighbors tell me they’ve never seen me outside without her by my side! We are thinking about the Fagans!
Danielle says
Yuo are being so brave. The thought of anything being wrong with my pooch makes me a blubbering mess! Memphis and I will say doggie prayers for Sadie tonight! She is so cute, even with droopy eyes!!!
Esther says
From one pet parent to another, Sadie is lucky to have such a wonderful mom as you! Sending good thoughts your way. Pets are truly a part of the family.
Meredith says
I stumbled across your blog a few weeks ago and have been loving it! I especially love how much Sadie makes the blog-her little side comments are the best. I have 2 fur babies (a male golden retriever Boone and female chesapeake bay retriever Kona) and they are always included in whatever we do even the annual family photo shoot 🙂 I hope your girl feels better and that everything turns out ok-and wish her a speedy recovery. So happy to have found such a great blog and keep up the great work!
Nikki says
Awww…she sure looks like she needs lots of love! Sadie is so lucky that she has a great family to take care of her. Speedy recovery wishes to Sadie!
Dana says
Aw. Seeing that picture of her breaks my heart. it so terrible when your pet has to go through that. my dog has also been experiencing health problems lately, and it is like a member of your family going through it! prayers and thoughts are with you, and give sadie a kiss for me!
Heather says
Glad to hear she’s home getting some much needed loving! Prayers for a speedy recovery! And I know our dogs arn’t just “dogs” they are truly family!
Elle says
Of course Sadie is family.. she is your own special girl and you are doing such a great job taking care of her and comforting her and loving her. I hope you all get the news you are hoping for. <3
Katie says
Awww she is so cute, she is melting my heart with that droopy look. I’m so glad she did well and I will be praying for good results. 🙂 I admire your strength and positive outlook on this. And pets are definitely a part of the family… 🙂
Sonja @ The {Happy} Travel Bug says
I know she’s glad to be home with her “momma”. Love the pic of her just staring at the blanket! Too cute!
Kristin says
awww feel better Sadie – poor baby. I dont consider my pup a pet; she is my youngest daughter 🙂
Alex says
I hope Sadie gets well soon! 🙂
Trina says
Oh, Sadie!! OMG, those pics!! Def not your normal bundle of energy and spunk! Hopefully she’s back to normal soon and you know more from the vet. Glad her little operation went well.
Pets = children, especially when you don’t have children…yet!
I’m very interested to find out what is causing this for her and if it’s common to Vizslas?! I’ve noticed a few tiny, tiny bumps on my almost 2 yr old but they seem to disappear after a while?!
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
Aww, look at that drugged up puppy face. So cute and sad at the same time.
Also, my bunny is fixed! They have lots of reproductive problems when they get older if you don’t fix them. It is not cheap, either. But it’s worth it because they have a lifespan of around 12 years.
Fabian brought home those snap peas a couple months ago and I kinda thought they tasted like cardboard. He said he liked them, but then I watched them sit in the pantry and never get eaten, then tossed. I guess the Cheetos won.
Janet says
I’m so sorry to hear about your dog. I recently found your blog and I love following you. I am fairly new to blogging and stay pretty busy with my own Flower and Gift Shop( LadyBug Flowers and Gifts) and family.I also do wedding planning and events as well! I too have a furry friend, on top of a 3 yr old daughter. We call him our son, because that is what he is. I’ll be sending positive thoughts and prayers your way. We share a lot of the same views on working out and staying healthy and active!
Irma says
Praying for a speed recovery for Sadie and peace of mind for her mama. Our pets are our furry little kids!
Audrey Adams says
Aww poor Sadie! Awesome girl! She deserves a chicken sandwich! Hope her recovery goes well. I bet she’s super happy there’s no cone involved! Have fun studying!
Amber says
Poor Sadie! Im not used to seeing those sad droopy eyes. I know what you mean about being a member of the family. My heeler and lab got out of the yard this morning and when I called my boss to tell him I wouldnt be in until I found them he made me feel crazy! Would you let your child roam the streets? No! So why would you like your dogs, they’re my kiddos too!
Melanie @ Queen of my Universe says
It’s really totally horrible but some dogs are so ridiculously cute when they are drugged and spaced. I totally treat my German Shepherd as a member of my family. I talk to her like a human and everything. People without pets just don’t understand. 🙂
Sarah @PickyRunner says
Sadie is a part of your family. That’s why dogs are brought into homes. They aren’t just some random stray animal. I hope she feels better fast so you can head back out for some more runs with her!
