Sadie is such a trooper.
I took her to the vet’s office right when they opened this morning and the woman at the front desk told me Sadie was scheduled for one of the first surgeries of the day. (First up? A bunny getting neutered, which I found oddly comical.)
I came home and did my best to study while I waited to hear back.
I made simple summer chili for lunch (I used turkey instead of lean ground beef) and ate it with Snapea Crisps.
I first tried Snapea Crisps at Katy’s baby shower. File them under “things that shouldn’t taste good but somehow do.”
After lunch it was time to pick up the little patient.
The vet said Sadie did great and that everyone got a kick out of her before surgery. They called her “Slink” because she kept acting feeble before they even did anything to her. I guess Sadie shares my fear of all things medical.
Because of where Sadie’s stitches are, the vet said she didn’t need to wear a cone, but recommended that we put her in a t-shirt if we leave her alone so she doesn’t scratch at the area.
She is definitely still feelin’ the meds, because she is currently staring straight down at a blanket on the couch.
I plan to stay by her side and study on the couch while she slowly returns to normal.
Her eyes are droopy and watery and she’s drifting in and out of sleep. I’m giving her lots of love and told her about all of your kind well-wishes.
I really must sincerely thank all of you for your amazing kindness. I know Sadie is “just a dog,” but she truly feels like a furry member of the Fagan family and adds so much joy to my life that I hate to see her in any pain. She’s doing so well, and I’m very hopeful that the biopsy results will help shed more light on what exactly is going on in her little body and give us a course of action to take to get her healthy! As always, I promise to keep you in the loop. We were told we’d hear more within a week.
Off to study and give Sadie some love. Thank you again for your warm wishes. You guys are the best!

She is definitely not just a dog! Look at that face! *puppy hugs*

Furry or not, pets are a part of the family. I still get teary about my Wolfgang who passed over a year ago and can’t sleep without Mya at the foot of my bed. I hope sweet Sadie has a speedy recovery.
Laura Gallegly says
I love Sadie so much and will definitely be thinking about her lots! She is in good hands with you as her mom!

First of all, NO dog is “just a dog,” and certainly not Miss Sadie! Wishing her all the very best, plus snuggles and treats.

So glad to hear that Sadie’s surgery went well, Julie! I agree with you–dogs are family members, not just pets! I will keep Sadie in my prayers, hope she has a quick recovery and everything turns out fine! 🙂

Dogs ARE family! So glad to hear she came out of her surgery okay! Sending lots of love and light. xo

I hope your puppy is feeling better soon!
I agree that those snapeas taste way better than you’d ever think. A coworker brought them to work and I ate half the bag at lunch.

I’m so glad Sadie’s surgery went well! She looks so sweet in all her pictures. Dogs are such big parts of our lives. I’m wishing nothing but the best for Sadie! She sure is a sweetie who has great parents who love her so much, I wish all dogs had the same. Keep up the great work! I look forward to hearing updates on her 🙂
Sue says
Oh, that poor little face! Here’s hoping Sadie feels better soon and the results are good.
Rachel says
Oh my gosh that is the most sad face I have ever seen! Well wishes to her!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Aww, poor baby Sadie!! Her sad face makes me just want to cry! 🙁 I hope she gets to feeling back to normal ASAP.
On a lighter note, I have seen those snapea crisps at the grocery store before and have always been curious about them. I am glad to hear that they get a good recommendation from you. I will have to try them!
Angie @ Losing It and Loving It says
YEA! So glad to hear your update. And Sadie is not just a dog, she is your baby. I LOVE that you guys love her so much. It makes my heart smile.
Our kitty (almost 2) broke his leg twice as a kitten so needless to say that was a very hard time for us. Me especially since I’m so dang emotional lol It was 4 months of living his life in a crate after a couple surgeries and such a heart breaking thing to deal with. So I totally get it.
They are our babies…spoiled rotten lol
Sara says
Awwww, poor Sadie! Wishing her a speedy recovery! Our dog is like a family member too, so I totally understand :]

AWE! That picture of Sadie-Girl, broke my heart! we have 3 dogs and they are DEF our babies! I am so sorry yall are going through this, and I know the stress and worry is unbearable (I know it would be the same with our pups!). I am saying a prayer for sadie and her sweet family tonight! Think positive thoughts that the results will come back good!

Aww. That picture looks so sad but I’m sure she is glad to be at home with her family. I hope the biopsy results are good news!
Khushboo says
Glad she’s in good hands now :)!

Poor girl! Dogs are definitely members of the family, the only time I ever saw my dad cry was when our family dog died. I’m sending get well wishes to Sadie from the west coast!

People who say our pets are “Just animals” truly do not understand. They don’t understand the funny personalities that animals have, and though they can’t verbally speak, I believe they do communicate with us and show us how much they love us.
Praying for Sadie’s quick recovery and positive biopsy results!
Becca says
I love reading your blog and of course love seeing pics of Sadie. She reminds me so much of my Mollie with her expressions. Sending positive vibes your way that everything is ok!!! 🙂
Brie @ Eat Books says
Julie – Sadie is not “just a dog”! She’s a very important part of your family and my heart goes out to you and Sadie (and Ryan!). Our dog Saigon, is very much an important part of our lives and definitely consider him part of our family and more than just a dog 🙂 When he had his stroke a year and a half ago we were first told we would have to put him down. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen my husband break down and cry. We didn’t have to put Saigon down, thank god, and I can’t even think about the day he is no longer in our lives without tearing up 🙁 Hang in there – and don’t ever feel like you need to justify your love for your dog 🙂

When I read your blogs each day, in a strange way, I feel like you are part of my life. And because of that, I want nothing but the best for you. My thoughts go out to you and Sadie. Seeing that photo with the droopy face makes me sad. I hope you get to see happy and active Sadie once again and very soon. Am sincerely praying for you all tonight.
Bek @ Crave says
Obviously she’s more than a dog to you guys 🙂 Aw, it’s sad seeming them so unlike themselves! Sadie will be up and at ’em in no time 🙂
Willemijn @ Fashion Food Travel says
I know Sadie will be fine in no-time! Obviously, she is more than just a dog! I have a cat and I see here more than just a pet. I have her for 6 years now and she and I are really close.
Good luck with your study and taking care of Sadie!

My fiancée & I are huge dog lovers but can’t have one right now due to finances. Sweet little Sadie is one of our many “honorary dogs” (sad but keeps us out of trouble – live vicariously through our friends dogs!) As I’m a loyal reader & just love all the stories & photos of her! Lots of love and prayers to that sweet puppy dog face 🙂
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Aww Julie Sadie is not just a dog, I really hope no one said that to you. If I were in your situation I would be so sad. My puppies are a part of my family, we love them just like we would a family member, and we get mad at them when they do something annoying (like bark or chew things) just like a family member. My dad calls them his 3rd and 4th kids. ;p I’m sending happy healing thoughts Sadie’s way!
Nancy says
Aw my face just dropped seeing Sadie doped up on meds. I’m glad they were able to get her in quickly and remove the lump. Hopefully everything is in the clear now. Animal lovers will understand that Sadie is not “just a dog”. Alfie’s sitting in my lap here right now as I type this comment and I just want to hug him tight thinking of Sadie!! xo.
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Aww, poor Sadie! I sure hope she gets back to feeling 100% very soon. I’m wishing you best of luck with the results. I have to completely agree that Sadie is not just a dog. A dog truly is a family member and is more than just an animal. It’s the hardest thing to watch them go through something because they are helpless and can’t tell you what is wrong. Stay strong! I’m sure she will be alright 🙂
Sue says
Sadie is “not” just a dog. She is a well loved member of your family. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and I hope everything turns out fine. That picture of her makes me want to cry. I hope she’s feeling more like herself today. Please give her a gentle hug for me.

I read a quote recently that has really stuck with me, For us a dog is only a part of our life, one piece in it but for a dog we are their whole life and their only person. Dogs are special and I know the strong relationship you can have with your dog, I lost my dog to cancer 3 years ago and reading your story brings tears to my eyes. I know Sadie will be fine since they found it so early, it hasn’t spread and she’ll be 100% before you know it! Phillip’s was wide spread and he never had any lumps or anything, no signs or symptoms so you are good. Sadie will be driving you crazy and laying all over your sister and this whole thing will be a memory 🙂
Jenni says
Glad it went good! Will be thinking of you guys! I grew up in a house where our dog and full blown birthday parties and he really was like the baby of the family so I get it! There is nothing in this world like the love of a dog.
Shannon says
POOR BABY!! I hate the thought of a dog feeling bad 🙁
But she’s young and fit so I’m sure she’ll recover nicely!
Stephanie @ My Freckled Life says
Awww, poor Sadie dog! She looks so pathetic. I’m sure you’re giving her TONS of puppy loving though, as she aptly deserves!
Carrie @ Season It Already! says
You pooch is never “just a dog”. Dogs are companion animals and love us as much as we love them. I just read “In a Dog’s Heart” by Jennifer Arnold and I feel this even more now because of it. 😉 Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Sara says
Awww, poor Sadie! It’s so hard to bring a drugged up dog home. When my dog had surgery a few years ago, he was so out of it when we got home, I couldn’t bring myself to not be near him. Luckily though, he slept it off and was back to normal the next day. Hope she feels better and heals well!
Chrissy says
That picture of her poor droopy eyes is so sad! She’s lucky to have a loving family like you guys. And anyone who says that a dog is “just a dog” has obviously never had one – they’re definitely a part of the family (though I might just be saying that to justify how much we baby our lab, Brody). I’m glad the surgery went well!
Jessica Hedberg says
Sadie is NOT “just a dog!” She is your baby! 🙂 I would be the same way if my furry/four-legged baby wasn’t feeling well. I saw the update and I’m so happy she is doing better!
Shephalli says
I was unable to read the blog yesterday (I live under a rock) but I am so glad to hear the surgery went well. Please give her a jerky treat from me 😉
Cassie @RedLetterDaye says
No Such thing as “just a dog!” I’m probably about as excited to adopt a pup as some girls my age are to have a baby.
I think I’m going to try that summer chili recipe with morning star farm crumbles. I’m a not a vegetarian, but I prefer making chili with that stuff. This is another nice twist. Too bad I’ll be travelling for super Bowl Sunday, or it’d be a nice dish to bring to the party.
Jen N says
Poor puppy! I hope everything goes well with the results! I foster for a rescue group and seeing the kittens come back from surgery all doped up makes me sad for them. I hope Sadie’s feeling better this morning!
Meg says
I’m behind on your posts! Poor Sadie girl 🙁 I love my dog more than most humans so I know how hard it is to see them in pain.
Brita says
In my opinion, there’s no such thing as “just a dog”. They’re each so special, and should be loved like a member of the family. You guys are great doggy parents, and Sadie loves you for it 🙂 Hope it all turns out, and I’m glad she’s feeling better!
T says
NO dog is ever just a dog!!!! They are definitely members of our families 🙂 Hope Sadie is doing well!! I’ve got my fingers crossed that everything is A-OK!! xoxo

I too have a Vizla pup, I hope your little darlin is A ok. Its scary to see them with a potential issue.
Leslie @ Body Won't Break says
I’m late with commenting as I am just now going through my Google Reader. But I wanted to let you know how glad I am that Sadie is feeling better! Our dog, Rascal, had surgery for a quickly growing bump that was in almost the same exact spot as Sadie’s. The vet said it didn’t have any real growth so it wasn’t sent off for biopsy. He recovered quickly and we are definitely hoping that there are no more bumps – ever! Those things are scary and expensive to remove.
