After I published my morning blog post, I gave myself a little time to digest breakfast before leashing Sadie up for a five-mile run.
Her typical morning walk morphed into a run since we both needed to sneak in some exercise today.
It wasn’t even 8:30 a.m. and the Florida heat was already cookin’. It was a hot, slow run, but it felt good to get out there and get moving.
I was in desperate need of a shower after our run and immediately washed off the sweat and came out feeling so fresh and so clean, clean. (<—Outkast, baby!)
As I toweled off, I noticed Sadie sprawled out on our bed.
(If you think we make our bed every day, you are seriously mistaken.)
Please notice the fuzzy, out-of-focus tail in the above picture. You cannot even walk one step toward Sadie without her tail flappin’ around and making the noise of a small propeller. Walk away and it immediately stops. It’s oddly entertaining.
When I saw Sadie looking exhausted on the bed, I thought I actually accomplished the impossible.
Did I out run Sadie?
I actually asked her whether or not I made her tired aloud. Like a crazy.
I got this look in return:
She then bounded out of bed and brought me her stuffed pig, trying to entice me into a rousing game of tug-of-war.
One time a fellow vizsla owner told me that vizslas start calming down at age 10. Ten.
Unexpected Stretch
This may be a little odd to share on the blog, but since I tend to overshare as it is and many of you guys are runners, surely one of you have thought of this same thing a time or two before.
Do you ever count shaving as a post-run stretch?
The ledge in our shower is ridiculously high, so I have to place my leg in an uncomfortably high position when I shave. I love doing this after a run because it gives me an unexpected hamstring stretch that lasts a lot longer than the hamstring stretches I would do on my own.
Showering + Stretching = Multitasking
I followed up my shower stretch with some of my favorite hip stretches before getting ready for the day.
Lunch
I had a late morning meeting today for the Taste of Ocala so lunchtime came a bit early.
I felt kind of weird eating pork and roasted cauliflower at 10:50 a.m. (I tend to eat closer to 1 p.m.), but it worked.
I used pork leftover from last night’s dinner and tossed it with roasted cauliflower, olive oil, lime juice, red pepper flakes and fresh cilantro. I got the idea for the flavor combination from the recipe for crispy chicken thighs with cauliflower and cilantro in this month’s Real Simple magazine.
After lunch, I headed out to my Taste of Ocala committee meeting which lasted about two hours. The big event is on Saturday so I’ll be busy tomorrow and Saturday helping to set up. I can’t wait to see everything come to fruition!
Since my meeting took place close to Ryan’s work, we planned for a quick mini-date to Starbucks since I had a coupon for a free drink for my birthday.
Vanilla latte for me!
Ryan ordered a chai crème Frappuccino and sat on the most awkward chair to ever exist in a Starbucks…
Is it a couch? A chair? A futon?
If you sat all the way to the back, the chair would hit you in the middle of your calves. Naturally I laughed at Ryan as he tried to navigate that bad boy.
Before we left, I noticed this sign which I thought would greatly appeal to my fellow Frappuccino lovers and those who love a good deal:
Frappuccino Happy Hour starts tomorrow! Get ‘em while they’re… cold.
I am currently blogging from Starbucks and plan to finish up my work day here. Sometimes getting out of the house is the only way I can concentrate and judging by all of the Sadie pictures that have popped up on the blog today, I’m clearly feeling easily distracted.
Catcha lata!

Hi! I LOVE your blog…this is off topic but I had a question. I love your balanced approach towards exercise and food. I am curious, do you weigh yourself to “keep yourself in check”? Also, do you decided on your workouts based on being consistent and staying more in routine or do you just do whatever your feeling? Thanks =) =)

We had a German short hair, which reminds me of Sadie and she didn’t start calming down EVER. We loved her to death and she was a sweat heart but she even made trails around the INSIDE of my parents house from all the loops she would make during the day (their down stairs is very open and makes a circle).
Doing my blogging from a coffee shop right now as well!
Andrea @ Andrea Out Loud! says
yep my GSP reminds me of sadie so much! she actually finally has started calming down… at age 6. mostly meaning she can actually lay down and relaxd now rather than anxiously pacing all the time!!!
Blog is the New Black says
I should have shaved today… I pulled a hammy muscle at the gym today and “shtretching” (shave/stretching) would have helped!
Melissa @ SquatsandSquash says
shower stretches are the way to go!!! especially warm showers, because then your muscles are warm and it makes me feel like I’m getting a better stretch than if I was somewhere else! I’m just waiting for the day where my standing leg slips on a bar of soap or something and i get more of a stretch then intended…
Jill @ Jill is Active says
Haha never thought of it that way – but yeah it absolutely counts as a good stretch session! Ugh it’s only 2:20 and I’m definitely feeling the afternoon slump – if only a Starbucks was closer to my office!!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Thanks for the Frapp happy hour reminder – there’s one in my office building!
Stephanie @ My Freckled Life says
I’ve never thought of shower stretching before, but I can totally see it now. I’ll never look at shaving the same way again! haha.
Also, that Frapp happy hour could be very, very dangerous. I feel like a Starbucks addict – I am starting to drool already. I think I have a problem…
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
Haha I sure hope my dog calms down by age ten! People keep telling me “just wait til he’s two, he’ll calm down.” I’m not sure I believe them!
Whitney @ Whit Likes Fit says
I have a 4 year old yellow lab/german Shepard mix and I don’t think he will ever mellow out. And while sometimes I wish he would stop acting like a puppy I’ll be really bummed out the day he’s too old to run around like a crazy man.
TB says
I just discovered your blog and love it! I wanted to tell you that I did one of your treadmill interval workouts yesterday and it was awesome. I had never thought of interval training on a treadmill, but it was a great workout and kept me entertained and motivated the whole time. Thanks!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
Hahaha you are so funny!! But I actually kind of know what you mean. After my half-marathon on Saturday, pretty much any move felt like stretching … especially shaving! 😉
Laura says
I’m 6 months pregnant and its safe to say that everything about trying to shave right now is a work out for me 🙂 Like you though i totally get a little thrill when I realize how efficient I’m being when I’m able to multi-task things like that by accident.
Not to be a Debbie Downer but I was checking out the Starbucks Frapp menu last night since I had heard about the deal. I couldn’t believe how much sugar is in them! I’m not a normal Starbucks drinker but I had no idea that most of those frapps had as much or more sugar in them as the glucola I had to drink for my glucose test. Just kinda blew my mind, and killed my craving…fast.
Sam @ Fit for My Fork says
I would love to run with a furry friend for company… why can’t cats go running?! 🙁
I will have to steal my mom’s dog, but he’s tiny, he’d never be able to keep up, haha.
ashley says
I feel you when it come to hyper dogs. I have a jack russell mix and he is out of control. He NEVER gets tired. He is always on the move, running laps in the house, jumping on something, chewing anything he can get his teeth on. He even tried to climb a tree once. His energy and curiosity know no bounds. He wears me out every night I get home from work, and when I used to do freelance writing from home, it was a challenge to get anything done.
Amanda says
Ha I have definitely thought of the shower stretching before … usually when I am loofah-ing (is that a word) the bottoms of my legs and feet. I think “multi-tasking!!”
Hillary says
I’ve never thought of the shower stretch like that, but I guess you’re right! As a fellow multi-tasker, I kind of love this.
Oh, and Frappuccino happy hour doesn’t stand a CHANCE this weekend. Cannot wait.
Hayley C @ Running Down the Runway says
Frappucinos are my weakness! Although I do love your homemade frappucino/smoothie- so delicious!
Kristen says
For a minute, I thought the title was “unexpected stench”, and i figured you had quite the theme going on for the day… 😉
Annie says
We have an almost 7 year male Vizsla…and everytime I start to think he’s slowing down he proves me wrong. He was my running buddy though marathon training this winter and completed tons of long runs with me. That worked for about 24 hours of somewhat mellow-ness from him!
Brittanie @ Three Bracelets says
BAHAHA, you crack me up with your comments from Sadie! I definitely consider shaving a stretch!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Haha I don’t have to put my foot up too high to shave, so it’s not much of a stretch to me!
Lauren says
Stretching in the shower is actually really good for you! I am starting PT school in the fall and in my last pre req class we learned that stretching in the shower is BETTER than stretching after your muscles cool down. The warm water allows your muscles to stay loose and can actually help with soreness. I stretch in the shower all. the. time.
Amanda @ Dogs, Chocolate and Fruits & Veggies says
Enjoy Sadie being able to outrun you. I always thought my Jack Russel would be able to out run me forever. Lately he has quit on me several times, I think it is because he is getting older. It makes me sad, but I’m just grateful that he is still extremely healthy!
Elizabeth says
We have a Vizsla mix and she’s still going strong at 9 years old! We actually got her at the humane society and she has been the best dog ever. Do you keep Sadie in a cage while you are gone? We have to keep ours in a cage during the day while we’re at work b/c she destroys the couches, carpet, floors, doors, etc. with her scratching.
peanutbutterfingers says
no. sadie is free to roam! she doesn’t seem to scratch things though. oh and i LOVE that you rescued!! i’m sure your dog is VERY loved!
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
I’m going to have to work my dog back up to somewhat longer distances! Even though she’s a herding dog and is probably supposed to be built to run all day, she’s a little baby and likes to soak in the pool every 15 minutes or so while we play fetch.
Yellow Haired Girl says
My fave Starbucks has the same chair. I. Don’t. Get. It.
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I’m loving that Starbucks is doing the half priced frapps this weekend! I definitely need to hit up Starbucks. 🙂 That is one odd looking chair!
Debbie says
I am new to your blog and I’m really enjoying reading about your life. We just moved from Ocala to Pittsburgh last summer. I’ve lived there most of my life and it is and always will be my home, I miss it:) I hope you are enjoying horse country, it truly is beautiful there!!
peanutbutterfingers says
how neat!!! hope yuou’re loving pittsburgh. i was born in harrisburg. looks like we flip-flopped states. 🙂
Katie @ Katie Moves says
I always think I can wear out my dogs by running them. Never. Ever. Works. haha but at least their active!
Jasper {crunchylittlebites} says
I used to work at Starbucks…Frap hour lasts from now until OCTOBER every year………………..shoot me. Sorry, I am just so happy I don’t work there any longer 😀
peanutbutterfingers says
LOL!!
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
I have opposite feelings about stretch/shaving after running. I usually end up with some type of hip cramp from bending awkwardly and then I’m like, guess I’m done shaving! lol.
stephanie**s says
I always talk to my dogs and I swear they understand me 🙂
Laura says
My dog is a golden/collie mix and he’s a mellow, laid-back type of guy. He only has off-the-wall energy when he’s going on his daily walk.
Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie says
I’ve been wondering this for a long time and I’ve looked all over your blog, so it’s there’s an answer, sorry I missed it, but how did you pick the name sadie? Because I love dogs like children (I’m a crazy person), dog names are just as fun to me as baby names. So just curious 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i honestly cannot remember! i know i loved the name molly, but ryan vetoed it. i think i just suggested it and it was one we both agreed on!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
Haha I like the idea of shaving counting as post-run stretching!
My family has a (rat?) terrier (I don’t believe he’s a rat terrier, but that’s what we tell everyone). He’s 12 and is just now starting to slow down. He still gets puppy-like bursts of energy every now and again, though. Personally I’m all right with that, because I’d like to believe my dog will live forever.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
haha i can completely relate to the stretching while shaving thing! i hate stretching AND shaving, but both are necessary, so why not knock them out at once?!
i’m often more productive when i get out of the house every once in awhile too. i went over to starbucks the other day to work on some stuff because our internet was out. i was initially so annoyed that i had to go, but afterward i got SO much done in a short time. i realized i should do that more often!
Carol @ Lucky Zucca says
Sadie sleeps naked!! Hahaha! Our Sadie does too 🙂 Does she ever wear a collar? I feel like she always has her pink harness on instead!
peanutbutterfingers says
sometimes! she’ll wear a collar on hikes, but when we’re at home or on walks around the neighborhood she’s naked (at home) or wears her harness (on walks).
Laura says
LOVE stretching while shaving in the shower. I feel so productive and relaxed afterward!!
Alex @ Healthy Life Happy Wife says
My dog does the same thing with her tail! So excitable! I love it though…makes me feel loved 🙂
Sarah @ RunningChickago says
Starbucks’ birthday coupons are the BEST! 🙂 just used mine the other day!
Jillian says
We had a vizsla growing up and she was the most wonderful dog ever. They are so loyal and smart! Whenever I look at your Sadie it makes me so happy…but it really does make me miss my Bailey. What you said about out-growing the puppy stage is so true….ours passed away when she was 8 from cancer but she acted like a puppy right up until the time that she got ill. I still think about her all the time. They are the best breed ever!
Megan @ The I-Do Diaries says
Not a TMI question at all…I too think that shaving and stretching is pulling double duty and I usually do the same thing! I’m actually really horrible about stretching out after a long run (something I really need to start working on!)
Chelsea says
I alwaaays think of how much harder shaving would be if I wasn’t as flexible as I am haha.
Melanie says
It’s called a “chaise.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaise_longue
FitPhilanthropist says
Get it, girl! Way to multitask!
Brooke says
Hi Julie! Will there be a book club reading this month?
peanutbutterfingers says
we’re voting on the book today!
alex says
um, we have the same exact leash and poop bag. Not like you care, but still. haha! Have you ever had Passion Tea/Lemonade at Starbucks? It is incredibly refreshing! The sugar intake is a little much but it is fantastic once in a while!
Ashley says
Try with no sugar. At first there’s a clear difference but after awhile you will not miss the sugar. 🙂 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i love their passion tea, so i bet i’d love this combo!
Ashley says
Good post! On a side note – I never make my bed, haha.
Jentry Nielsen says
Yes! I love that! I did that the other day, used my shaving tactics to count as an after run stretch! ha It works for me! That is so funny!!!
Sadie is so adorable! I love the tail trick! 🙂
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
You are not the only one! I work out at home a lot at tend to shower right after since it’s convenient and actually look forward to the shave/stretch routine! haha
Mary says
So funny – I always get a good stretch in during the shower! I just suppose since I’m all warm after a hot shower its just perfect timing, right?
