All my life I’ve loved reading and writing. My interest in words and their ability to capture emotion, change feeling and inspire imagination prompted me to hide underneath my comforter with a flashlight after bedtime in elementary school, reading away even though I knew I was supposed to be sleeping.
It also sparked an interest in a variety of career paths, some more unusual than others.
I want to write greeting cards. I want to write the limericks at the end NPR’s Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me podcast. I want to write product descriptions on boxes of food. I want to write the informational plaques that appear in front of displays at museums or along hiking trails.
This morning a new writing-related job intrigued me as I made breakfast.
I want to be the person who comes up with the catchy phrases that may be found on the Chiquita banana stickers.
How does one get a job like that?
Breakfast
I sliced the creative little banana on top of a batch of overnight oats that I prepped yesterday after dinner.
I’m not sure what I did differently, but this batch tasted doughier than normal. I was quite a fan!
Workout
Today’s workout began with 20 minutes on the elliptical before I assembled free weights and a mat on the open floor of the gym to knock out a circuit workout designed by Tina through the Best Body Boot Camp program.
I’m on the final two weeks of the boot camp and if the workouts planned for the next two weeks are anything like today’s, I’m in for a treat. I loved the fast-paced tempo of the workout. The circuit made the time pass so quickly and before I knew it, my workout was complete.
My favorite exercise in the circuit was the 180-degree squat jump.
I’ve done squat jumps many times before (like in my jumping jacks circuit workout or no nonsense circuit workout), but I’ve never done 180-degree squat jumps.
Turning my body around added a whole new challenge to the jumps. These will definitely be popping up in my workouts in the future.
I love discovering new-to-me exercises the kick my booty!
Questions of the Morning
- Is there an unusual job out there that intrigues you?
- Do you have a job considered “unusual” by many? How did you get into it?
- Do you write the captions on the stickers of Chiquita bananas? If so, may I be your new coworker?

That would be such an awesome job! That or writing the fortunes in the fortune cookies would be pretty awesome 😉

I have always wanted to write the desciptions on food boxes! Or write the descriptions on menus for restaurants. My friends always make fun of me because before I go to a restaurant I love studying the menu. Glad to know I’m not alone!

I personally wouldn’t call my job unusual, but many seem to think that it’s not the most ideal job. I’m a non-profit fundraiser. When people think of working for non-profits, they usually cringe and think about how little money I must make. I’ll admit I make less than I could be in other fields, and that’s what intrigues people about my conscious choice to work in the non-profit field.

I consider my job unusual – I’m a 911 dispatcher for a large police service in Canada. We hear some of the craziest stuff everyday. Not one day is ever the same.
My dream job was always to be the person who got to name nail polish/make-up shades. I giggle everytime I open a bottle of OPI’a “Caught with my khakis down”. Genius!

oh my gosh! i bet that is a VERY interesting job. thanks for all that you do!

Copywriting!! So hard to get into.. They are unusually clever and genius. My friends and I graduate college in a few weeks, and almost all of us are Ad/PR or Marketing.. even the most creative people I know don’t have a shot!
But you’re already getting to be so successful…keep working away and building your portfolio and you’ll be writing Chaquita banana-isms in no time chica!

I’ve always thought it’d be fun to write greeting cards! In high school, someone even told me that I should do that for a living! How does one do that though? I’d also like to start freelancing. I write for a website now, but I think I’d be much happier writing about things that I love.

I want to write the saucy little lines on the Taco Bell salsa packets! It’s like Laffy Taffy…I ask for extra hot sauce just to read it says!

Okay… I’m late to the party, but I wanted to add that I actually have one of the jobs you mentioned.
I work for a consumer packaged goods company (probably something you have in your pantry!) and part of my job is write the romantic/fun descriptions on the back! It’s really fun, but just a small part of what I do when it comes to the managing the artwork/other info that appears on the package- haha!
I just assume no one reads those anyway… so this totally made my day!
peanutbutterfingers says
that is so neat, betsy! i definitely read boxes and product descriptions all the time. 🙂

I just graduated with a degree in Lit. Journalism and am having the hardest time finding a job 🙁 …so this post really got me thinking since I’ve been scouring job boards for most of my day. Unfortunately I think the only job I’d love to have right now is that of a professional bread baker by day and writer by night 🙂

I’m an actor and a dog walker, so I guess those are a little unconventional! Not sure how much longer I’ll be dog walking for. I’ve been doing it for 2 years, and while I absolutely adore it, I’d really like a job with benefits (and one that has more growing room). Acting careers make it difficult to find good day jobs, because our rehearsal/show/audition schedules are always pretty crazy.

You’ve got a great life Julie! Trust me – writing one-liners can also get boring over time! Great line by Bob Dylan that sums up what I believe in life – No one is free. Even the birds are chained to the sky! I am a platelet rich plasma therapy doctor from Mumbai and if that makes sense to you, it is indeed considered an unusual profession by many! Its a treatment option for various orthopaedic injuries and conditions, which have traditionally required surgery or other extensive treatments.

Hi Gord. I have been out of the country for three weeks and disconnected from all social media so I missed your posting. Thanks for the mention and I look forward to meeting everybody at the conference next week!
