It’s a wet, dreary morning in Ocala today. Rainy weather warrants working away in a cozy coffee shop, so after breakfast this morning, I drove to Starbucks to redeem my free birthday drink coupon and take advantage of their wifi.
FYI for all my Frappuccino lovers, tomorrow through May 12 is Frappuccino Happy Hour at Starbucks from 3 – 5 p.m. Half off all Frappuccinos!
Since I planned for today to be a catch up day for freelance and blog-related work (I am not working at the gym today), I welcome the rain. It makes it easier to feel motivated to work inside and get stuff done.
Backing up a bit to this morning’s breakfast…
Right after I woke up, I made myself peanut butter toast topped with a sliced banana and pumpkin pie spice.
It was an easy morning meal and a filling one, too!
Water Fitness
Yesterday I got some exciting news at work! I am going to be teaching water fitness classes!
I will begin training with another instructor very soon and the plan is for me to teach the class two days a week.
I’ve always been a huge fan of water-based workouts (I was on the diving and water polo teams in high school and worked as a lifeguard every summer), but I know teaching water fitness classes will be a new challenge. I’ve taught swim lessons before and taken water aerobics, but teaching a water fitness class will take me out of my comfort zone a bit and I can’t wait. Lots to learn!
Question of the Morning
- If you were going to teach a fitness class, what fitness class would you want to teach?
I really hope to teach boot camp or circuit workout classes in the future. And of course my dream is to teach BodyPump, assuming I can convince my gym to hop on board and bring the class to our gym. Fingers crossed!
Oooo, water workouts are fun! I wish more gyms offered challenging water classes instead of just the ones for people with arthritis. (sorry granny, but you don’t own the pool) I’d teach a water class, spin, or body pump.
I would teach spinning!!
The rain does actually help with motivation to get work done…I just thought of that…I guess it’s because who wants to be out doing things will all that nastiness happening 😉
Great news Julie! That’s super exciting!
Well, right now I’m studying to be a pilates teacher and I’m SO nervous since my exam to teach the class is not this coming weekend but next weekend, squeee. It’s scary since I’ve never taught anything before. So I guess I’d have to chose pilates:)
Hoping you’ll get to teach bodybump too! I’m sure the time will come!
That’s a hard one! I love classes! My gym has an incentive for the month of May to attend 20 group fitness classes, and you get a free tank! I think if I were to teach one though I’d be keen to do Pilates or Spin! Two of my faves!!
I’d definitely teach Body Pump! I don’t think you could pay me enough to jump around in a pool and try to instruct people…I’d probably drown!
If I had to pick, I think I would want to teach trekking classes! They’re hard to find, but my gym offered them for a few years and I LOVED them. They were pretty popular, but since a lot of treadmills were required, they only taught them early in the morning (6-7am)–even still, those classes filled up!
that sounds like so much fun!!!! i’d love to take a trekking class.
It’s kind of like the running version of spinning–lots of tinkering with speed and incline. I bet you would be very good at it!
Oh awesome! I’ve never taken a water based workout before, sounds like so much fun! I would want to teach bar method or pilates. I love them both!!
With your swimming background, you’ll be a great water fitness instructor! I’d love to teach spinning classes. Zumba would be fun, too, but I definitely lack the required rhythm and coordination. 😉
I would definitely teach Body Pump or a Soul Cycle Spin Class. I would have a ton of fun making the playlists! 🙂
I took a Soul Cycle class one time when I was in NYC and loved it. Such a blast!
I’m a total water baby, so a water-based class sounds awesome. I would also love to teach Centergy (kind of like Body Flow).
Oh that’s a tough question! I would probably prefer to teach some type of bootcamp class – that way they nor I would ever get bored!
Probably spin – because I’m so picky about the drills and the music that I only go to certain instructors’ classes!
I would love to either teach a boot camp class because everything flies by so fast or spin so I could choose the awesome music.
I would teach a boot camp style class or a kickboxing class!
I teach Turbo Kick (A high intensity dance/kickboxing workout) at my local gym, and absolutely LOVE it! I also teach boot camp, circuit strength training, and hip hop dance…but Turbo Kick is easily my favorite 🙂
ah congrats that sounds awesome!! I would like to try water aerobics sometime. As a retired swimmer it pains me to get in the water for anything other then cooling off in the sunshine though!
I would want to teach spinning! Love the energy and I would love to pick out songs for playlists! 🙂
Pumpkin pie spice on pb toast?! Why haven’t I though of that? Yum!
I was thinking the same thing! I’m going to try that immediately!
The water class sounds like fun! I think if I were to teach a class it would have to something that involved dancing like a hip hop cardio class.
I’m with you, definitely Bodypump. Love it!
You’ll be great at teaching water fitness! I’ve always wanted to take a class like that, but at my gym they are all targeted to older adults and I feel like they’d turn me away. I need to tell them to make a water fitness for the young crowd, too! 🙂
I would love to teach BodyAttack, it’s my favorite class. Teaching BodyPimp (hehe, I’m not fixing that) would be awesome too. Good luck on your new water fitness classes, sounds like fun! And I’m sure they’ll jump on board for BodyPump, it’s a popular one!
How exciting! You will be a wonderful instructor!
Ps. I started going to BodyPump at my gym last week and it has been kicking my butt! I completely understand your obsession now and I know I’m going to become a BodyPump regular. Bonus: It’s at 6:00am so I can start my day with it! The BEST. I also learned that sore arms = TRex arms.
I’d love to teach hot yoga
I’ve actually considered teaching Zumba, which is shocking since I’m shy and not a great dancer… Haha I just love the class so much and I would love to encourage other people to enjoy it!
My sister’s a swim and water fitness instructor. She loves it, but just a heads up…don’t buy or use your expensive bathing-suits (hers last about a month with all the chlorine) and keep a seriously great hand cream and cuticle oil on you at all times! I’d teach zumba!
I would want to teach a boot camp class for sure! I love that style work out more than just about anything (aside from running). Good luck with the training!
I would want to teach TurboKick. That is my favorite class of all time. I took the class for years and think I’d actually be good at teaching it. Of course, I’d have to get certified and all that good stuff so it probably won’t happen anytime soon.
Woohoo thanks for sharing about Starbuck’s happy hour! I hope that applies to Texas SBucks too!
Teaching water aerobics is so much fun! I’ve been teaching classes at my gym once a week for the past 9 months and I love it. Variety is key! I enjoyed doing 3 sets of 10 moves for 60 seconds each.
I would loooove to teach Pilates because I think it’s awesome to see how much of a workout people get during the class. People always come in expecting not to hurt but your abs BURN and I would love to teach it! I love water fitness, too, because you definitely get a good workout in while letting your body heal a bit!
I think I could teach spin class or yoga. I’ve taken some water fitness classes and loved them, I’m sure you will be awesome!
You played water polo?? I did too! It’s seems so much less common in the South than in Cali, where I grew up. Talk about a good workout! If I could teach any fitness class, I think zumba or kickboxing would be awesome…because that would mean I’m good enough at either one to be able to teach it! 🙂
That is so exciting! I know youre going to do awesome!
Oh wow! How exciting! Congrats to you!
That is a great question, as I think about it a lot. I have dreams of teaching kick boxing at my gym, but I’m nervous I won’t have to confidence to do it. I try to take the class as much as possible and maybe in a couple of years, I will get my certification :-). It is definitely a big dream of mine. But, how in the world do those instructors keep talking while they are working so hard??
How exciting you’ll be teaching the water exercise classes! Do you have to get group fitness certified?
I’ll be teaching my first classes soon – a thirty minute ab class and a thirty minute strength class.
My job is a fitness instructor! All I can say is I love love love teaching and I love teaching everything! Something new like kickboxing or water aerobics is fun, since it’s not on my regular class schedule. But Yoga is my favorite. But its my one true love, I got my 200 hours last summer and love eating, sleeping, and practicing yoga 24/7!
You will be a great water fitness instructor julie!
That is way cool! I wish EVERY gym had body pump… I have to drive to another gym to go to it!
Wow that sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve never done a fitness class in the water but I’d love to!
I currently teach a circuit/boot camp class and I love it! some day I hope to be crossfit certified to teach a crossfit class. I’m a terrible swimmer so water workouts wouldn’t work so well for me =P
I’ve taught spinning, kickboxing, abs, step, and strength before but I think my favorite was spin!
I love curling up at the coffee house, and catching up on reading blogs! getting lost in my own lil world 🙂 enjoy your day Julie!!
I would love to take the water aerobics classes at our gym, but they’re seriously all older people (no offense to them, but it’s awkward to be the youngest one by 30+ years)….
I think I would teach Pilates or Spin. Or some sort of dance class..and by dance class, I mean I’d put on music and we’d just shake it. No structure at all.
I’m a huge fan of the RIPPED series- it’s definitely what I would like to get certified to teach. It’s set to fun music and combines weight training with HIIT plus it’s fairly simple to bridge the gap between beginning to advanced. It changes every 12 weeks. Hands down, it’s one of my favorite classes!
I would love to teach a pilates class!
I’ve looked into getting certified for Zumba classes before — hasn’t happened yet, but maybe someday!
That’s too cool! I’ve never done a water fitness class before, but I’ve heard that they’re haaaaard. I was a competitive swimmer for quite some time, so I know both how fun and how challenging the water can be!
If I was going to teach a fitness class, I’d want to teach something not-so-intense. Maybe yoga, or even ballet!…if I could do ballet. 😉
I taught water aerobics while I was at Texas A&M! It’s such a blast and I found that while the crowd was older, they were the best and so engaged! I personally love to teach interval classes so I can combine weight training and cardio drills!
I don’t think I’m coordinated enough to teach ANY workout class haha. But I did always like cardio kickboxing, when a good instructor taught it. So if I was actually better at it, I would teach that! 😉
