Kate and Brittney, two fellow Ocala-based bloggers that I met a few months ago at the one and only blogger event I’ve attended in the area, told me about the opening of Breadalicious, a new local bakery.
Kate told me that their chocolate croissants were out of this world and I’ve been meaning to try one myself for a few weeks now. I had a meeting with a freelance client close to the bakery late this morning, so I popped in afterward and bought two chocolate croissants.
Since Ryan works close to the bakery, I brought the two croissants to his work and called him up, thinking we could have a quick, impromptu mini croissant date! (I also kind of felt like a psycho when I called him from his work parking lot, so I channeled my inner-Isla Fischer in Wedding Crashers: “I’ll fiiiind you!”)
Well, my mini date idea was a total fail since he missed my call due to an 11 o’clock meeting. I ended up leaving his croissant rolled up in the bag in the bed of his truck and ate mine in my car like a totally cool person.
I am extremely picky when it comes to croissants. If they’re hard or even the slightest bit dry, I think they’re nasty. Not so with this baby!
It was slightly crispy, perfectly flaky and the inside melted in my mouth. The chocolate tasted so indulgent and the buttery flavor of the croissant paired perfectly with the rich flavor. I almost drove back to Ryan’s work and grabbed the croissant I left for him out of his truck bed, but wanted him to experience the croissant glory for himself.
When Ryan called me back, I glanced outside and saw that it looked like it was about to rain. I told him he had to run outside immediately on Mission Save Croissant before it started raining. When he told me it was already raining by him, I yelled like a drill sergeant. “RUN! RUN! Save the croissant!” Fortunately the croissant was found safe and sound and thoroughly enjoyed by Ryan as well.
Breadilicious gets two thumbs up from the Fagan family! Next time, I’m trying their apple tart. It was calling to me.
Lunch
Once I was back at home, I assembled a yummy lunch of chicken salad with carrots and mushrooms, Greek yogurt and a nectarine.
(Random tidbit: My grandma made that light blue potholder that I use as a napkin. Thanks, Nana!)
I ended up slicing the nectarine and stirring it into the Greek yogurt for some added texture.
Back to work!
Question of the Afternoon
- Is there a special bakery, ice cream or dessert shop in your hometown that makes a fabulous dessert or pastry that you adore?
Please describe in detail. Just talking about sweets makes me happy.
In Orlando, I loved Jeremiah’s. I miss their gelati. It was basically a layered cup of creamy Italian ice and soft serve ice cream and was out of this world.

Today I stopped by our local cupcake truck and picked up 5 cupcakes (not ashamed to admit that only one was for my boyfriend and I only got him that one so he wouldn’t touch mine 😉 ) . One was a “lunch box” cupcake which is peanut butter cake with peanut butter frosting filled with strawberry jam and topped with potato chip crumbles- it’s the greatest thing ever. The other type was a french toast and bacon cupcake… equally good.
I’m all for food trucks, especially ones that bring cupcakes to my work!

Murray’s Ice Cream and Cookies in the Westport neighborhood of Kansas City, MO, is hands down the BEST homemade ice cream I’ve ever had! I get my birthday cake from them every year – so good!! My favorite flavor is chocolate flake fromage. Simply perfect. They also boast such wonderful flavors as Three Nuts in a Tub, One Drunk Monk and Ultimate Mint.

The next time you’re in Boston, you simply must try Flour Bakery. They have the most delicious pastries (and now a cookbook called Flour, which I obviously own, and have bought numerous copies of as gifts). They have sticky buns, homemade oreos and pop tarts, and a plethora of cookies! It’s hard to pick a favorite. Everything I’ve had there is great. Especially their lemon ginger scones.

I went to school in Saint Louis and am completing my dietetic internship there. Nothing beats a Ted Drewes apple pie concrete. Thick, rich vanilla custard mixed in with apple pie chunks and whipped cream on top. It’s like a taste of fall in your mouth…even if it is usually enjoyed in 90 degree plus temps and enough humidity to make Snooki’s hair frizz.

We honeymooned in Tahiti/Bora Bora/Moorea and got free breakfast every morning. And every morning I had a chocolate croissant. They were amazing. I still think about them.

We have a place called Bread and Company in Nashville and they have those chocolate croissants too! I used to get them EVERY time I ate lunch there. My husband and I also love Sweet Cece’s yogurt, it’s sort of like Pinkberry but with more options.

Last week I worked at a farmer’s market where I bought the most delicious cherry pie ever. The lady I it from said the baker is from Germany and makes all this stuff the European way. I’m not quite sure what that means, but it was sooo good!

I’m not as fond of baked goods as I am of FroYo… been on a huge froyo kick lately!
I make quinoa salads for lunch. The ingredients vary, but this week it was quinoa, tuscan kale (chopped very small), cucumber, green onions, crimini mushrooms, cilantro, and radishes (sliced really thin). I make a dressing of soy sauce, mirin, hot sesame oil (chili oil), and fresh squezzed lemon juice. Sometimes I slice some avocado on top and/or leftover shredded chicken. Love quinoa!

We have a small restaurant/bakery that makes the most AMAZING muffins. They’re more like huge cupcakes stuffed with cheesecake filling but they changed my life.

Oh my gosh, yes – in my hometown (aka Las Vegas) there is this super yummy, homey bakery called ‘Layers’ and I’m obsessed. When I was younger, I used to tell my parents I wanted to work there.. they have great coffee and delish desserts.

There’s an asian bakery in my area that makes Taro bread and a Pineapple bread (no pineapple inside– it’s just named it because it looks like one) 😛 I love Asian breads…so light n’ flufffy!

I eat in my car by myself all the time. I always feel like a loser, so I just pretend that everyone will think I’m on a quick lunch break for a really important job or something.
There is a local bakery in my town that has the best petit fours. omg. The cake is just the perfectly soft and buttery. And the icing tastes like glaze over a doughnut. I die!

Operation Save the Croissant – LOVE IT! That’s totally something I would do to my fiance too – the drop and run food delivery method. When we were in college I couldn’t get into his lab, so I used to text him and say “I just dropped dinner outside the door – bye!” haha.
There really aren’t any non-chain bakeries in my hometown, but when I studied abroad in Paris there was this adorable little crepe man whose stand was right outside our metro stop. We used to go there EVERY MORNING and get nutella banana crepes. AMAZING!
